Brazil-Ireland Recap
Dunga Reiterates His Departure After South Africa
Dunga stated today that he is still intending to leave the national team following the World Cup. He made these comments in Rio while attending a Carnival event. He said that regardless of Brazil’s result in the tournament, he would want to leave the managing hot seat.
Dunga has been on the record about his intentions [...]
Injuries, Contracts, and Parties
The Injuries:
Dani Alves has returned to training after missing over a week of action with a muscle injury. He should be available for Barca’s match against Getafe on Saturday.
Real Madrid’s unofficial newspaper of record, Marca, ran a story this week about Kaka’s nagging hernia injury that limited his appearances this winter. The paper claimed that [...]
News and Notes
1/28 Globo is reporting its Santos for Robinho.
Fabio Simplicio will move to Roma at the conclusion of the Serie A season. “Simplicio has an agreement with Roma. Once his contract here ends, he will play in the capital,” Palermo Sporting Director Walter Sabatini told an Italian radio station. Simplico had been linked with a [...]
Oh Robinho!
Multiple media outlets have been reporting that Robinho is telling people close to him that he wants to return to Santos. To say that this has been an awful season for Robinho would be an understatement. He was recently subbed in a match against Everton that he came on as a substitute. It has become [...]
Official: Brazil to Face Ireland
Its official, Brazil will play Ireland in their next match. This matchup had been all but official for some time now. However, the match will not be in Dublin, but rather the Emirates Stadium in North London. The match will be March 2nd. Dunga will name his squad for that match on February 9th.
I would [...]
Some More News and Notes
Deportivo La Coruna left back Filipe is being tracked by Real Madrid. The two clubs have started negotiations over a transfer fee.
Thoughts on Juve-Milan; News and Notes
This was a match that showed front and center the seasonal form of many key Brazilian players. Melo allowed the first goal of the match with a shocking failed clearance. He and Diego were almost completely absent from this match. Ronaldinho and Thiago Silva on the other hand looked world class.
The Left Back Problem
With months to go until the World Cup, almost all slots on the Brazilian roster are filled up at this point. Most of the remaining open positions are on the bench, including reserve forward and keeper. However one exception exists in the starting XI, and that is at left back. Since the international retirement of [...]
World Cup 2010 National Anthems: South Africa, France, Mexico, Uruguay
Seems like the most popular part of our World Cup 2010 preview podcast was the national anthems segment. I would agree, in that any segment where we're not talking is instantly preferable to the segments where we are. But since those podcasts contain only 10-15 second lyric-less samples, I thought it was worth expanding the idea into a full series of posts about national anthems.
As you hopefully know, the national anthems of each team will be played before every World Cup game, adding to both the atmosphere and the sense of occasion. For this first post, may I present the national anthems of Group A: South Africa, France, Mexico and Uruguay. [read more]
World Cup Moments: Philipp Lahm Kicks Off The World Cup Properly, 2006.
When discussing the history of any sport, any talk of the "greatness" is bound to be met with a quick hop in a time machine, going back into the annuls annals where myth and storytelling often displace fact and reality to the back seat. And this was necessary in a time when most could only follow sport through the words of others; words which were often embellished, contorted, polished, creating an aura which far superseded the event. Similar to the children's game which starts with a simple sentence at one end of the room and morphs into something entirely different by the time the exercise ends.
A lot of times, great moments are much simpler than we think. Sometimes great moments are just that: moments. Moments without grand results, without a decisive impact, without parades, and without babies being made on the streets. Merely a single moment in time meant to be enjoyed. And equally as often, these moments are right underneath our noses. [read more]
World Cup 2010 Jerseys: Mexico
We continue our review of World Cup 2010 kits with a look at what Mexico will be wearing in South Africa. As mentioned before, I have zero fashion credentials. Unless sitting through The Devil Wears Prada and finding it reasonably enjoyable counts. Which I'm pretty sure it doesn't. But I can offer an honest reaction that hopefully stays away from being either too snarky or too serious.
Big news is that between World Cup 2006 and World Cup 2010, Mexico made the switch. The big switch. From Nike to adidas. So the home and away versions of their three stripe manufactured World Cup 2010 kits (as modeled very seriously by Francisco Palencia to the left there) can be found below. [read more]
Wavin' Flag: The Song You'll be Singing at World Cup 2010
You may as well have a good listen to this song now, because you're going to be hearing much much more of it during World Cup 2010. It's called "Wavin' Flag" by Somalian-born Canadian-rasied hip-hop artist K'naan, [read more]

Great strikers
I think we're all going to agree that Vagner Love is going through a great period of his football carreer. The man is on great form. He has scored 12 times in his first ten matches. In all Flamengo history, only one player has better numbers: Pirilo. Vagner still has ...
