Quarter finals, here we go

As usual against my predictions, France has defeated Spain by 3 to 1, and they’re playing Brazil next. This World Cup is now getting into its quarter finals, and there is no more fooling around anymore.

Brazil 3 – 0 Ghana

There it goes. Ghana runs a lot and reigns with ball possession, but doesn’t have enough ability to put a ball in the net. Brazil scores an early goal with Ronaldo – which is now the new World Cup scoring record holder, gets an offside wrongly marked with the same Ronaldo, gets a goal with [...]

Brazil vs Ghana formation

The match starts in one hour and a half; see the preview here and follow it live here. Also be sure to read Euler’s opinion with a lot more pre-game info here (just below).
The formation has just been announced and Parreira is getting back to the Croatia/Australia formations: Dida; Cafu, Lucio, Juan, Roberto Carlos; Emérson, [...]

One More Big Moment

It’s great to see how many people are reading this blog. An event such as the World Cup surely deserves a world wide gathering of opinions like we have here. We get many positive messages about our efforts to represent our country and at the same time we must endure some fanatics calling us names [...]

Robinho gets a rest

Just when it looked like Robinho had finally made it into the main squad, he gets injured after a goal kick training.
According to CBF, the injury is nothing serious, and he’s not feeling any pain – however, he won’t be able to play against Ghana next tuesday. He will continue physiotherapy for a few days, [...]

Japan is no Ghana

Brazil played very well against Japan. If you read the live blog master Bob did you may think the match was boring. I totally disagree. The team was twice as fast as the previous one. Cicinho did a great job even having failed to cover the Japanese attack in the first goal. To give you [...]

What are you Ghana do…

…when they come for you?
Brazil advances to the round of 16 and faces Ghana next tuesday. Parreira says he hasn’t decided the team formation yet. Maybe he just wants it to remain secret so Ghana won’t be able to plan in advance, or maybe he was awestruck with the performance by most of the second [...]

Brazil 4 – 1 Japan

Brazil was playing with only 5 players from the main squad and was pretty much dominating the game but Japan opened the score on their first goal kick. Brazil came back to score 4 goals though – 2 by Ronaldo, which now surpasses Pelé and is the Brazilian players with most goals on World Cup [...]

“Brazil is not a monster”

Is it time for the ULTRAZICO? This image is the front page of ‘O Globo’ newspaper sport section. I thought it was worth sharing with you all. Today’s match against Japan will be important for our side because Parreira will be able to do some experiments.
Some TV shows informed that Parreira will spare Emerson, Cafu [...]

Japan countdown

Brazil plays Japan in about 7 hours, see the preview here. Parreira didn’t give any hints on the squad formation yet, said he’d only announce it immediately before the game – this probably means he’ll try some changes, because he usually says he’ll just use the main squad with no mistery. On the other side, [...]

World Cup Moments: Dennis Bergkamp's Goal vs Argentina in 1998

March 9th, 2010 | By: Daryl | Comments Comments(14)

If you remember the 1998 World Cup in France, then you remember Dennis Bergkamp's goal for the Netherlands in the quarterfinal vs Argentina. The score was 1-1 in the 89th minute, and extra time looked almost certain. Until Bergkamp produced his moment of magic.

The goal was all about three touches, all with his right foot. First Bergkamp brings down a long high pass from Frank DeBoer as gently as if he were putting an infant to bed. Second, he knocks the ball through experienced Argentina defender Roberto Ayala's legs for a surprise nutmeg. Third he expertly judges the bounce and fires into the far corner to win the game and take Holland through to the World Cup semi-finals.

We have a YouTube video below, featuring the now famous Dutch language commentary from Jack van Gelder. The man is so ecstatic at what he's just witnessed he can only scream the name "Dennis Bergkamp!" over and over again. Watch below and try not to do the same. [read more]

Fashion Faux Pas: Italian Fishnet.

March 9th, 2010 | By: chris | Comments Comments(15)

Italy's Gianluigi Buffon's official World Cup home kit was released recently, and it caught a few eyes. Largely because everyone at Puma thought it was to be for the Italian ski team to be performing at Vancouver, thus the reason it looks like it was made for...the Italian national ski team.

Coincidentally, Gigi pulled up lame with a thigh injury just before the recent friendly and thus he avoided having to wear the kit - Fedrico Marchetti was given that chore. Vicious rumors persist that Buffon was hiding from the kit. No one blames him. [read more]

Brazil World Cup Team History: Part III (1974-1990)

March 8th, 2010 | By: Daryl | Comments Comments(6)

In Part I of Brazil's World Cup history, we covered the barren years of 1930 to 1954. In Part II we reveled in the golden years of 1958 to 1970, which yielded three World Cup triumphs and permanent possession of the Jules Rimet trophy. But the good times can't go on forever, and if one national team continued to win the World Cup 75% of the time (as Brazil did from '58 to '70) then we'd probably all stop watching. So in Part III we recap Brazil's post-1970 trophyless spell. Plenty of good football (especially from the Brazil team of 1982) but no World Cups from 1974 to 1990. [read more]

Are There Workable Alternatives to Video Replay/Goal Line Technology?

March 6th, 2010 | By: Jan | Comments Comments(8)

As Rob already reported in his previous post, FIFA just put their foot down on the issue of introducing any form of technology to help referees.

At the 124th Annual General Meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), chaired by FIFA, a decision was made to no longer pursue the development of goal-line technology - or consider technology in football in general. [read more]
