20 Images of Rio

June 18th, 2006 | By: Euler Costa | 19 Comments »

Thursday I woke up and decided to stroll around the streets near my place to get some pictures for the blog. I hope more bloggers do the same, for we are only reading about it rather than having the visual experience that this event calls for. I would love to see the streets of Trinidad and Tobago, of Portugal, of Italy and so on… …escape the realm of pure description to the rich flavor of photographic delight. One image is worth a thousand words, right? So I selected 20.000 words to share with you all.

I hated this video… anyway… at the end I say “rumo ao hexa” (forward to the sixth championship). We can’t expect less than another victory, as you all probably know already. Here in Brazil it is sinful for a player if he lose the WC. Amen to that! We must win again!!!

Martin: it’s hard to say because it’ll depend on whether Ronaldo is back on track, but here’s what I suspect:

Brazil will win, but not by a landslide; Australia will be able to score. The game will probably be tense between Adriano and most of Australia’s defenses.

So I’d say… 3-1, with several yellow cards for both sides; 2-1 at first half (Kaka at 15″, then Viduka at 21″, then Adriano at 39″ after a Ronaldo assistance), with a very dull second half while both teams try to avoid tough battles, with one lone goal by a chance shot by Emerson from outside the goal area at 34″.

Ronaldo to be replaced by Juninho Pernambucano at 35″, but just as a moral effect (so Ronaldo can hear the crow shout his name - strategic coach decision); Juninho Pernambucano comes in to help on the midfield with Kaká, Ronaldinho is moved forward along with Adriano. Everybody’s too tired though and nothing come of it though. Juninho also doesn’t get the chance for a free kick.

I tend to be wrong though. Here’s to hope I’m being too pessimistic instead of optimistic. :D

Oh, the picture of the juice bar just gave me a hankering for a cochinha. Looooooove those things. Nice pictures Euler, and it’s nice to see that you choose VIP over golos da copa.

Great pictures!
There are fans of Brazil all over the world actually.
There were more people watching Brazil the other day than France against Switzerland here in my university in Toulouse, France!

Thanks Gustavo! Thanks Emilio!

Soze is dreaming about the coxinhas! Very good indeed, with catupiry cheese, even better!

Zé, your prediction was very detailed!!! Wow!

My prediction is: the match will be dramatic with strong scenes of violence. Adriano may be sent off after fighting back some agression. Brazil 2, Australia 1.

The Australian team is very confident since they scored those 3 goals against Zico’s Japan.

The VIP magazine is great. It even brings some Argentinean jokes: do you know how an Argentine commit suicide? He jumps from the top of his ego.

Ze, wow, what a description, right down to the yellow cards. I like it, excpet of course the score line.

Saying that, I would be happy with a draw. We have confidence with the Japan result but we know what we are up against. The World Champs.

Here’s to a good game.

Euler love the pics and the Argentine joke!!1

Nice set of pics. I really love stuff like this. My one trip to Brasil happened to be during the Copa América in 1991 (!). It was amazing to be there while games were going on, far beyond any sort of national interest in any sporting event that we have here in the States. I can just imagine how much greater it must be to be there during the WC!

I think flickr has some sort of open gallery of photos taken during the WC; you might want to submit them there for a wider audience.

The game of Brazil and Australia was the most emotive Brazilian teams really showed claw in the marking and more intermeshing in the attack, only lacks a bit Ronaldo to it to catch rhythm and to beat the record of goleado of the pantry they wait.

Thank you very much, Steve! Thank you too Tony, David and Philip! You guys are very kind!

To Edward and Martin, another one: During a lightning storm, why do the Argentines go outdoors? Because they think God is taking pictures of them.

I love to remember my old posts from the last World Cup, mainly when the comments are elegant and joyful as these.
