Avoiding the Oba-Oba
This is a term very commonly used in Brazil when someone is overconfident in any dispute. The oba-oba mood (usually used together with a juggling hand movement) tends to be a consequence of favoritism and can be very harmful to any group of players. But Parreira is not going to bring any psychologist to the Selection’s technical commission.
I got worried when I found out about this, but the Brazilian coach was very assuring when he said his method has been working for the last 3 years. Brazil won the Copa America, the Confederation’s Cup and finished the South American World Cup qualifying in first. Well, he has a point. He prefers to bring people to give motivational lectures than to include an outsider into the technical commission.
Parreira also said that this oba-oba mood is a real danger but the technical commission has good tactics to protect the players against this kind of outside influence. I hope he is right. There is nothing worst than seeing the oba-oba mood get in the way of our objectives.

[...] If Brazil win with difficulties it will be the worse case scenario. Chances of this happening? I say 60 percent. Parreira will be satisfied, players will be comfortable and things will remain the same, with that dreadful oba-oba mood. [...]

[...] Now he is worried, thinking that Brazil has slim chances to get our Hexa. What? Yes I know, he is swimming against the stream on this. And I thank the football Gods that he thinks like that. As I said so many times before, the favoritism (oba-oba mood) will be the Selection’s doom if not treated properly before the tournament. [...]

[...] 4. Roque Junior Well… we must give the world a chance, right? He didn’t harm us at the Confederations Cup last year, so maybe he won’t be in our way this year either. My fingers are crossed. 5. Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has too many stars to choose from Oh, I like this one. To have so many talents is a big disadvantage this year! Anyway, Mr. Bobby McMahon can see into our souls and that’s really one big danger. The EGO factor may be a problem in this WC, but I don’t believe this will be a big issue. Our #1 player is Ronaldinho, the humble. His joyful football smile will erase these matters from their minds. [...]

[...] I remember Pele saying that Brazil would not win in 2002. At that time I got a little angry but, to be honest, I think it helped to avoid the “oba-oba mood”. We were coming from that Ronaldo’s strange health disaster in 1998, but as fanatic as we are about football, that was just another reason for us to win in 2002. [...]

[...] This part of the interview is crucial to me. I am constantly warning everyone about the damage the high heel effect can do to us and the problems we had in the past with the ‘oba-oba’ mood among our players. He pointed out seven other teams that are eligible to the title, so if your team was mentioned, you can start to rejoice now. [...]
