Brazil 0 - 1 France

July 1st, 2006 | By: Zé Fernando | 180 Comments »

So it ends (for real this time). Brazil is clearly outplayed by France, and loses 1-0. The only defence the French goalkeeper had to do was a couple of minutes before the end of the match.

Brazil started the match pretty well, but lowered the tempo shortly thereafter and allowed France to literally dance on the field. Zidane was the maestro of the match - clearly unmarked, his passes and dribbles were as if he had 26 years old. It’s strange to think he’ll be quitting his career after this World Cup, because he still has a lot of magic to show; our friends in defeat seem to agree.

Brazil’s changes in the starting lineup turned out to be inoquous - didn’t do any bad, but didn’t do any good either. Apparently, the biggest problem with Brazil was on the wings, where Roberto Carlos and Cafu weren’t up to the task. I usually don’t agree that they’re just “old” - they clearly did a lot of running - but most of the time it felt as they gave up on some plays so I think the age was at fault this time. Parreira’s changes near the end did make the team better, but it was too little, too late.

It still doesn’t take France’s merit on defeating Brazil though. The team had clearly done they homework and were better tactically and technically. They have improved a lot on this World Cup considering their first results during the qualifiers, and I think they’ll be strong contenders for the title. Watch out, Portugal.

By the way, this World Cup now has an all-european semifinals, with 4 teams from Europe (Germany, Italy, Portugal, France).

Thanks for the players for their effort - hopefully, in another 4 years, with the hype on the shoulders of other team, the young players of today like Robinho and Cicinho will be able to do their thing without the pressure of being the favorites. Better luck to them; we are just another team.

With this additional defeat, France becomes a biger taboo for Brazil - like Italy was a few years ago, before 1994’s finals - but it will only make things more exciting next time.

Also thanks for all the readers that provided insightful comments. It was pretty interesting seeing other points of view about something we Brazilians like so much.

Enjoy the rest of the World Cup!

And for God’s sake learn how to spell!

(Thinking about what you’re saying and basing it on well researched and credible information before ranting and raving would be a good idea too..)

Eliza and Affin - thanks for the link on the ball and the defense (my flank was uncovered…) I had heard I think on a one of the sky sports reports an interview with the people who designed the ball and how it had fewer patches or seams thereby by keeping it water tight as well as the weight being a little less. I think I read it in an article in my home town sports page as welll where they did a cover story on the ball. I am prettey sure I read that is was lighter there too. I’ve watched a lot of shows this past month and could have easily crossed up my info. I do think one of the comments on the ball was that is was like a volleyball.
It’s one thing to follow a team no matter what and to want to see them do well all the time - but realize that sometimes it just wasn’t to go your way or what ever- as what happend with our beloved Brazil this time around. It’s another to be a band wagon hack that jumps on the ‘kings of football’ when they lose a game throwing around useless insults - as this guy did calling me an idiot [when he can't spell], calls people ‘gay’ etc. He can not even defend his position and point of view or even engage in a discussion about what happend in the game. Brazil will not qualify for a world cup before Canada ever gets in to one. It’s amazing but Brazil gave up 2 goals in this cup, one of which knocked them out - and over the last 3 years - including the 18 qualification matches to get to the final 32 and the Confederations Cup, they only lost 4!!!
Really just a bunch of dumb luck knocked them out - poor decisions, maybe even fatigue factored in to it and worked against them this tiem around vesus the French. Every time this team walks on the pitch - its the other teams world cup final. To have 4 bad games in 3 years - man that is something. As the game unfolded versus France, after about 20 minutes I was thinkg that this does not look good - no possession by Brazil - and this continued on into the 2nd half and I just did not feel good about it all - because they had no possession - no mid-field play - or so it seemed. Once the goal happended the rest of the game is sort of blur. I will watch the tape soon, but until then, my feeling is that the team that took the pitch was more designed to get the game to penalty kicks. If the coach had taken the risk of putting in the team that was younger, hungrier but less expereinced, maybe things would have been different. I can understand wanting to play it safe by using the guys who have expereince and who have been under that type of pressure. The risk is that the expereinced guys lay back too much and show no sense of urgency [having been through it all before - they probably figured the goal would come or the space would open up at some point instead of trying to make it happen!!]. There was no spark!! It is really amazing to me that we as fans can pick up on all this - and yet the coach - who had control of the team - can not react or could not react and try to change it. I just don’t get it. He must have some of the same perceptions we all are sharing - why did he not do something? I think to that the players he put is trust in, betrayed him, especially R Carlos. I was reading match reports on the qualification rounds and R. C. played alot and played well, yet in the cup he brought very little to the team. What he did on that kick is without explanation. Will he ever go back to Brazil? Can he ever? -what do the natives of Brazil think of him? As flat as Brazil played, France only made one play on them and that was that kick. The real shame is that the team only needed to get it level and then have a shoot out in OT with Robinho out there with fresh legs - and they just flat out did not react. Very weird - of course all this has made the year or maybe even the life of some people including our dear, unfortunate friend named Brazil eat Fotball (what does that mean?) - even though I am not a fan of Argenttina, I did not react the way he did towards Brazil when they lost to Germany in Pk’s - I was very sad for them - Infact all the teams that lost - I always think of how much the nation hurts when the team looses. There is no honor in dancing on people’s broklen hearts…
qualification for 2010 starts in a year so we will all be ready for the new team and we can put this all behind us!!

THIS IS IN SUPPORT OF BRAZIL!!!!!!!

ya..brazil lost…they didnt play as well as they usually do…but, y do their OWN ppl have to be so insulting and discouraging???? Ronaldinho’s Statue was burnt down for God sakes!!!! and ofcourse with such pressure from the media and the “world of fame”, how r they expected to play to their best of ability on such an important event?? look at France…they r good..or BEcAME good…i admit…but they sucked in the last world cup…they went out early…extremely! but did their ppl discourage them and inslut them? no! (maybe they did but im not aware of it!) and look at them
now…they r on to the finals!
Im no Brazilian…but i have lived in brazil for many years.. and i love the ppl and the country…but if only the ppl would be a little more encouraging and supportive despite their teams loss in the WC……….AAAGH!!!!!! Brazil still is amazing…they have broken records..! ok..they perfromed badly this time…hard luck! i mean, where i am right now, im not aware of any other critisim to any other nation after they lost the WC with their sucky performances but to BRazil! y? coz they r knwon as the best and were expected to win! Well, maybe with less things to worry about such as “my nation’s ppl hating me if i perform badly and look bad forever”, they’ll do it in the next WC…ofcourse, WITH THE GREAT SUPORRT OF THEIR GREAT PPL FOR THEIR GREAT TEAM!!!!!!!!

RONALDINHO IS STILL AMAZING!! ppl have bad performances….and he just showed his! doesnt mean he will be bad forever! u’ve seen his best! and his best is THE best! just for one occassion, oout of MANY others, u all hate him now?? for shaaaaame….he is still amazing and deserves everyone’s support despite his performance throughout this WC…this goes for the other players who have also been critisized for stupid and trivial things…

The best to all…Enjoy the finals!

Fotbal ? Yeah it is another word for “soccer”, in another language it is spelt that way…

e.g. Romanian, czech etc

Not English however which is what you’ve been communicating to us in. So maybe next time you will imply that you are of those nationalities or are literate in those languages?

I didn’t know it was a Canadian habit to spell football as fotball.

In my opion i have saw two teams with great potental that got kicked out of the world cup harshly.
England and bazil are both great teams and it looked like the had tough breaks. I think England played well as a team and would of done better with a tiny bit better striking force.
Brazil to me didn’t seem to “gell” properly, if they would have you can bet they would have been world cup contenders.

Brasil just dont lose like that!

The problem is.. FIFA BOUGHT BRAZIL, ’cause they’re 5 time champions! If Brasil win 6 times.. NO ONE will ever get close from Brazil. This cant happen cause the show must continue. So Brazil was force do lose..

EVERYONE KNOWS how good they are, how good Ronaldinho is, how good the others are. The talent just dont dissapear one time to another… and they show no talent. Too strange dont you think?

I pretty sure everyone knows that.

You win some, you lose some.

Time to start looking forward.

Onwards to 2010. See you guys in South Africa where hopefully Brazil will play better and go further.

After all, guys, Brazil can’t always win - even if that’s what we want.

LISTEN TO ME AND LSITEN TO ME CAREFULLY; FRANCE BEAT BRAZIL BECASUE OF TACTICS AND POLITICS;
THEY SANDWICHED BRAZILS ATTACKING MIDFIELDERS( KAKA AND RONALDINHO)BETWEEN THE DEFENDERS AND VIEIRA AND MAKELELE; ZIDANE NO ZIDANE IF BRAZIL WANTED TO
WIN THEY COULD HAVE. ZIDANE IS THE 4TH BEST PLAYER OF ALL TIMES AFTER : RONALDO(PRE INJURY),MARADONNA,RIVALDO,ZIDANE AND THEN ROAMRIO/BAGGIO/HAGI.
PELE IS RUBBISH, CHECK HIM ON YOU TUBE, THOSE DEFENDERS ARE RUBBISH HE IS AVERAGE. RONALDO IS BETTER THAN ZIDANE, THE DAY RONALDO WAS GONE, ZIDANE CAME(1998 WORLD CUP FINAL), BEFORE THE INJURY TO RONALDO THERE WAS NO RIVALDO, ZIDANE OR FIGO, HE COMES BACK( 2002 WORLD CUP), TOP SCORER WITH 8 GOALS IN 7 GAMES.
FIFA PAID SOME BRAZILIAN PLAYERS TO LOSE BECAUSE EUROPE AND AFRICA WAS FINISHED, RONALDINHO,KAKA,ROBINHO,ADRAINO AND MORE WERE ALL FROM BRAZIL OR ARGENTINA, SO THEY PAID BRAZIL AND ARGENTINA TO LOSE, WHY THEY ACCEPTED I DON’T KNOW, I WILL SAY NO. DO YOU KNOW HOW I KNOW, JUNINHO CRIES DURING NATIONAL ANTHEM NOT OUT OF EMOTION OUT OF SADNESS, ROBINHO SMILES AND JOKES WHEN HE CAME ON, HE ALSO SHAKES ZIDANES HANDS AFTER THE GAME WITH HAPPINESS, RONALDINHO NEVER TOUCHES THE BALL ALOT DURING THE SECOND HALF, BRAZIL STARTED WELL AND ENDED WELL, WHY NOT IN BETWEEN?, BRAZIL DESTROY FRANCE WHEN THEY WANTED TO, SECOND HALF OF THE SECOND HALF WAS ALL BRAZIL, AND I’VE NEVER SEEN ZIDANE FIND IT SO EASY TO TAKE ON PLAYERS LIKE HE DID AGAINST BRAZIL, NEVER, THEY LET HIM. I HATE FRANCE, I WAS WITH ITALY

I agree James. Brazil did not mark Zidane and that is the only reason they lost. Italy had Zidane marked and he could not do a thing offensively. This and the fact that his spectacular header was saved by Buffon really pissed off and frustrated the old man resulting in the headbutt incident. Zidane is well past his prime and should have stayed retired instead of giving it one last college try. Brazil and Italy will always be a cup contender in one way or another. France is not consistent in this regard. I will not be surprized if France doesn’t qualify for WC2010 or 2014. Once most of their starters retire France is pretty much up the creek without a paddle. Au Revoir!
