“We can give a tremendous thanks to Diego Maradona”

Are arrogant comments like this really necessary?

The Maradona comment was hilarious.

Bruno, serious question: I recall hearing over the past few years how Brazilians lament the abandonment of its “traditional” style of play, i.e. the “joga bonito” (to summarize with a marketing term). However with the recent form of the Brazilian national team, including the Copa America 07, Confederations Cup 09, and just beating Argentina at home… do most Brazilians fans care anymore *how* Brasil plays, as long as they deliver these incredible results?

Hi Jose,

I think since 94 we do not care how we win. Victories are victories. I think Brazilians lament more the lack of connection between players and the country – it was nicer when the players played for Brazilian clubs. i can give you a more complete answer if you want to.

I really don’t understand how some fans can find fault with Dunga’s team. This team has won every single game it has played this year, beating Uruguay and Argentina away from home and also thrashing world champions Italy along the way. The team has averaged three goals per game against the aforementioned opponents. They have scored some beautiful goals too. Seriously, what more could you ask of a team?

I presume they want the national team players to juggle the ball box-to-box and to never even let the opponents touch it, while Dunga plays drums and dances samba on the sidelines. No thanks. Go Dunga!

Maradonna must be sacked. Argentina will have to play like Barcelona to get the best out of Messi. Play 4-3-3. Messi, Aguero and Higuain up front. Cambiasso, Mascherano and Maxi Rodriguez in midfield. Heinze, Samuel, Burdisso and Zanetti in defence (You must play two strong defenders that play in Europe and have experience in Europe) and Carrizo in goal. Tevez should not be played. Aguero and Higuain are more of an attackive threat.

Thanks for the explanation, Bruno. You can elaborate more, if you’d like.

I must also echo one of the sentiments voiced in the Argentina blog: how many times is Brazil going to beat Argentina in this EXACT SAME WAY? It’s incredible, so many games played through with the exact same strategy.

I also have to say that Dunga has become the best example of a national team coach that simply had to be given time to fulfill his vision.

Hey Jose,

Take a look at this:

I wrote it 2 years ago. You may find helpful.

Bruno i agree with you.. i still feel a certain amount of joy when they win but it’s not the same, i read that article you wrote & you are absolutely right about afonso never heard of him. When dunga took over i thought he would continue just like scolari, alot of local players in the squad with the few true greats that plays in europe. But it would seem as if every big club in the top leagues are lobbying for their brazilian to be in the team & that’s not right. Brazil don’t look like brazil anymore & it’s not as if we don’t have the players to fix the problem, it’s just that..they don’t get selected. It really hurts my heart to know that the best players are not been selected, just for marketing purposes. Just like how Rivaldo got left-out 94 for ronaldo who did not see the pitch in that wc, lol.. don’t worry i’ve forgiven Ronaldo for that a long time ago, he’s a true legend it’s just..Rivaldo’s legend would have been much bigger had he gone. Sorry to digrest; i’m happy we qualified but this team will not win the wc has it is, it needs soul.

Bruno Romano i have to disagree with you on for going all the way back to 1994,the 1994 team is exacly like this team but in (97-1999) and (2004 to 2006 before the WC it was all about Joga Bonito, remember the confederations cup in 2005 we beat everyone with style for me it’s all about winning so it doesn’t matter but Brazil didn’t stop playing beauiful football since 1994 (2000-2002) we were in a crisis but we had another star on our chest so…
Joel, what does Maradona have to do with the loss am i the only one who remembered Messi was also a total flop in the Copa America final back in 2007 it was the same situation in the frendly game in England in 2006 just face it for the past 10 years 1999 copa america (2-1),1999 friendly (4-2) 2004 copa america,2004 (3-1) WC qualifiers,2005 confederations cup (4-1) 2006 friendly game (3-0), 2007 (3-0) copa america, 2009 the most recent one(3-1) Argentina won 3 times against us in 1999 friendly (0-2),2001 World cup qualifiers (1-2) in Argentina, 2005 (1-3) in Argentina if you want you can add up the (0-3) last summer against the olympic team but you don’t wanna go there if i had to count the wins (not only the ones of the senior side) the list would be a lot longer just face it it doesn’t matter who play or coaching the Albiceleste we’re having a good run against you guys that’s all
