Brazil 4 : 0 New Zealand

Celebrating!Brazil won 4:0 over New Zealand yesterday. Did you like the game? It was ‘kind of’ easy, right? It was not a simple practice this time but at the same time nobody was really concerned about the outcome. The NZ defense was good enough to keep Brazil from scoring for 42 minutes. Brazil’s defense was good enough to keep a team like that from scoring any goals.

I didn’t like to see Parreira happy. It is great to see our team winning, but there is no need to be happy after a match against New Zealand. Kaka was the name of the game while Robinho was a good replacement for Ronaldo and the Seleção improved a great deal on the second half.

Nike’s footwear got Ronaldo out of the game. His new shoes got him some painful blisters, so he asked to be replaced. Even so he played well and even scored. Ronaldinho, as usual, played less than in Barcelona. Parreira always say that it is very normal because in the Seleção he is not alone as in Barcelona. He has other huge talents by his side to share the responsibility of winning with the others. No egos involved as many of our rivals like to falsely state.

Oba-oba faceSo that’s it. The ‘magic quartet’, or ‘fantastic four’ as many like to call them, is working fine. Parreira will be as aggressive as he can be in the World Cup, at least in the first stage. Our bench is great and they are going to be absolutely important for the German campaign.

Read about the match here and here.

Read that they are not worried about the killer blister here.

Martin, the first half was even slower. Brazil insisted on keeping the ball on their feet for too long or passing back and forth instead of going to the goal. I felt pretty bad in fact, like a wake up call saying “omg, these guys can’t play”. Thankfully it got kinda solved later on the match, with some tactical changes by Parreira and a little effort by guys like Kaka.

I guess the match against Croatia will be the first real match we’ll have to measure the team. I’m pretty confident though; on 2002 the team pretty much sucked on the first stages, then on quarter finals and onwards they played some of the best matches I’ve ever seen a brazilian national team play. Here’s to hope they’ll do that again.

Another good match for you and another BAD!!! match for us huh?…This is looking worse and worse for Croatia. I hope our coach knows what he’s doing because at this point, our entire country is questioning his ability.

I think in our overexcitement we’re forgetting a few important things.

The opposition wasn’t “just New Zealand, some unknown team from far away”. We’re talking about a team that was in Australia’s qualifying group, and against whom Australia couldn’t manage more than 1-0 on any of the both qualifying matches they faced each other off in.

Secondly, we’re discussing a relaxed Brazilian side that see no point in hurting themselves through over-enthusiasm and no point in tiring themselves out one week before the World Cup.

Moreover, every football fan knows that the actual gameplay reveals more than the scoreline. Frankly, it could have been anything from 4-0 to 10-0. It must also be mentioned that Glen Moss was doing a good job between the sticks for the Kiwis.

I watched the entire match, and I can assure Seleçao fans that Brazil commanded, no, dictated, the entire match. New Zealand only had one big chance and that was due to a major error by our good friend Dida, who is well known for it by now. I can’t find the statistics but I don’t think the Kiwis actually took more than a couple of shots on goal. Maybe three shots, I really can’t remember.

The large majority of the match was played in New Zealand’s half.

As usual, it appeared that Brazil had fielded one goalkeeper and ten offensive midfielders. Beautiful stuff. The passing was as good as ever.

There are only a few minor points to amend, in my opinion:

-Free kicks: We love him and all, but Ronaldinho really shouldn’t be taking the kicks. Ever since the last few matches of the Champions League, I feel that it would be better to leave them to Roberto Carlos or even Adriano, if Juninho hasn’t come on by then.

-Ze Roberto: He plays well and all, but when will this ruffian stop fouling people? Brazil would be the unanimous fairplay kings if it weren’t for this guy. He really needs to chill. His agressive contact is so un-Brazilian.

-Corners: 9 corners weren’t enough for the Seleçao to pop one in past the New Zealanders. There is nothing quite as valuable and easy to win as a corner kick, so Brazil should really turn this into an advantage. The way their machine works down the wings will assure them lots of corner opportunities, and they must be able to use these to their advantage.

You forgot the New Zealand GK. Can’t remember his name, but he’s pretty good.

Made some impressive and hard defenses. I think we could have scored 6 or 7 if wasn’t him on goal.

Unfortunaly here in Brasil we just can listen to Galvao Bueno screamming “ROOOOOOOOOOOOONALDINHO” or “BEST OF THE WORLD” 250 times in each game, instead of a fair analysis of the players from both teams.

Thankfully I watch all games on SporTV. If I had to endure Galvão Bueno through a world cup match I’d probably start hating football and everything vaguely related to it.

The blisters suck. I don’t know what happened, but I hope the Brazilian staff and Ronaldo figure it out. If they don’t find out why, and just use the same kind of shoe stretched the same way, who’s to know if this will happen again?

Nike has made Ronaldo at least one pair of new cleats since 2002, right? I’m almost sure. I don’t remember any problems with the design he wore back then. I know preferences change and Nike keeps pumping out new ones - but sometimes I wish they’d just revert to an older pair that worked flawlessly.

The problem wasn’t really with the shoe, but with the fact that Ronaldo had a “bubble” (well, we call it a bubble in Brazil) on his feet so it was painful to run. He tried different pairs of shoes with all kinds of paddings and decided he just couldn’t play with the bubble there.

It’s probably already taken care of, not a big issue.

I remember the last time I played with a bubble on my foot, I was under the impression the sole of my foot had ripped in half and that there was blood everywhere. Really, it was awful, I had never felt so much pain on my foot. Then when I got my socks off it was just a small bubble with no blood at all.

Galvao Bueno really believes that in fact Ronaldinho whistles all brazilian games, instead of the referee. He believes the ref looks for Ronaldinho agreement before he has to whistle something.

That makes me sick.

Galvao and Arnaldo Cesar Coelho (referee comments) were all the time saying how the referee was lucky to be called to whistle a Brasil game. Kind of “it’s the game of his life”.

And in one play where the referee made a clear mistake in a hand-touched ball by a New Zealand player, Galvao said that the ref whistled just because Ronaldinho said so. And something like “Who’s the referee to go against the best in the world ?”

The arrogance of Galvao Bueno is disgusting.

Hey Martin, thanks!!! The game was really nice to watch, very light. At the first half it was a little slow, as Zé commented, but it got better at the second half.

Akbar also pointed out some problems we had and I hope Parreira don’t forget to work something out.

About Nike’s shoes, I blame them. Ronaldo said he never had such problems before. He asked for his Real Madrid ones, believing the new model must have something new at the back.

If they created a new model just before the World Cup, he shouldn’t wear them. If he’s returning to the shoes he wore all season, I think that’s best. Damn it Nike, why can’t you leave our team alone?!

I still can’t believe how Nike kept bleaching the jerseys more and more. They almost didn’t have any golden color at all, before people started speaking out. Hey Nike, the jerseys aren’t supposed to be ugly-fluorescent-green, they’re supposed to be golden! And the shoes need to keep the feet safe for 2 hours - not just promote your brand.

For me the funniest is how Ronaldo’s “bubble” seemed to be the topic of every conversation on Monday. It was on the newspaper, TV, blogs :) , around the watercooler and on the streets. And not just in Brazil but around the world. I got an email from a friend that read about it on “The Hindu” (Indian newspaper). This has got to be the most famous blister ever. Anybody seen a picture of it yet???

Three days until the world cup. We’ve reached that desperate stage where anything would be interesting enough to keep us occupied, even if it was the life story of the hare who ran across the pitch during Mexico’s last match.

Yes, marco, Brazil exports shoes to the whole world. They are among the best, if you want to know.
