Brazil 4 - 1 Japan

June 23rd, 2006 | By: Zé Fernando | 37 Comments »

Brazil was playing with only 5 players from the main squad and was pretty much dominating the game but Japan opened the score on their first goal kick. Brazil came back to score 4 goals though - 2 by Ronaldo, which now surpasses Pelé and is the Brazilian players with most goals on World Cup matches - 14, the same as Germany’s Gerd Müller, the current record holder.

The seleção ended the game with only 3 players from the main squad in the field, and for most of the game the players in yellow pretty much danced on the field. One of the most important changes was replacing Adriano with Robinho. Not because he “is better” than Adriano, but because he played more of a support position while Ronaldo was left alone on the front of the attack - the team pretty much played for Ronaldo, even though the offensive came from everybody.

Robinho also proved he can play the full 90 minutes of the game and his speed isn’t just a 20-minute trick. Juninho Pernambucano came in and scored a very important goal for him - but it wasn’t after a free kick. Japan’s goalkeeper Kawaguchi did some very important saves on the first half, and would have been one of the best players on the match if he hadn’t failed to defend Juninho’s kick on the second half (it went through his arms - strange ball).

Watching this from a local bar was a thriller. We even had an Argentinian among us (cheering against the team). People were screaming like mad after each missed goal, they were cheering like mad after Ronaldo finally scored, and they were happy like mad when Rogério Ceni got in the match. Everybody was also expecting a Robinho goal - he was the best man in Brazil’s team in my opinion - but it wasn’t his lucky day. Later, hopefully.

On the other side of the group, Australia ties with Croatia and advances to the next round. I wasn’t betting on that, but I guess it proves how much guts and the will to win count on a football match. Kudos to the footballeroos socceroos - most people wouldn’t be expecting them to take one of those spots.

Did I forget anything?

Kewel, Brasil is one of very few in this wc who has all three wins… I think that means something. They can play this way against any team and I hape we’ll see that.

Hey Chakan, ever heard of the word “he”? Like instead of “him will bring…” you should say, “HE will bring.”

it makes more sense.

Finnaly Juninho, Robinho and Cicinho. If Parreira removes any of these against Ghana I will have to be locked up in a nut house. With him, obviously.

The early cup nerves seem to be gone. One of the most entertaining and matches so far! Good discipline on defense and great imagination on attack.

Now, Parreira has a big problem: give back the main team (wich cafu, roberto cartos, emerson) or start the game wich the team that played wich Japan.

Yeah Izzy - Argentina had it sooo tough - Serbia/Montenegro was such a challenge for the Argies. You are wrong about Argentina doing better than Brasil and here are the facts:

Argentina: 7 pts, 2 wins and 1 draw

Brasil: 9 pts, 3 wins

well…numbers sys nothing…brazil is not the only team with 9 points…though still a great time…the second best…TODAY…dont bring me wc history…or u wanna chat about england 66…or holland 74…
Argentina is playing just at the moment better football…drop your yellow jersey for one sec…and just go through the last games…
points means nothing….though argies scores 8 goals they still need to score tomorrow ..aint…
it is just a fact…argentina is better than brazil…
even with worths players!

Numbers aren’t the whole story, but in the cup, numbers aren’t irrelevant either. They have a function determining whether a team advances or not…I never said the defense was great, just that it was good and it showed greater discipline than in the first two games. Hypotheticals about Rooney or Tevez are good for daydreams. Brasil adjusts according to its opponent - like any good team, it would be crazy not to.

izzy Dillon, since u say numbers mean nothing, argentina made 6 goals, with only 9 shots, its also luck, the same game argentina could havent score none at all, brazil could have score 10 goals at least against japan, yet only 4 got in not because japan is weak, but because brazil created the chance of goal, Cote d’Ivoire created lots chance of goals, at least 10 against argentina on 1st game, yet argentina luckly won by 2-1.

anyway i think brazil have a chance to create chances to score many goals, if brazil play with a similar team of confederations cup 2005, if parreira keep his boring attack with adriano and ronaldo, Ghana gonna surprise brazil.

nice point chakan. although numbers aren’t the most important, it shouldn’t be put to the side either.

i have seen the game bet arg and serbia and montenegro. it was because serbia’s defense was weak. Japan’s defense wasn’t that weak compared to serbia and their goalkeeper saved a lot of attemps especially from ronaldo.

The point is not Argentina it is to be a bit more realistic…argentina still doing better..it does not matter if japan was strong or the serbians were crap..Brazil is not as good as the argies as an all around team….if the argies dont score today you know where a they are gonna put the 6 goals…so u Brazil…cos Rooney is not that far to be real for your weak defence…..or let do something wait and see but then do not tell me fuck off and get off from this blog when I come around to ask you for asnwer…have you seen German´s forwards! …and pls once again donr come around with old newspaper´s glories…

Chakan, there are many Americans who can spell English perfectly. Actually, a higher percentage than Brazilian people spelling Portuguese perfectly. Someone should do the actual research, but I would bet a lot of money on this. What, with all the favelas and jungles out there…

I was not trying to insult you. I simply thought you should know - if you are writing in English - just correct this one mistake and you are good. Why keep doing it?

thomas, you pathetic person. you claim not to insult chakan over an insignificant typo and then you say something bigoted and crass as “what, with all the favelas and jungles out there…”

americans like you are the kind the rest of the world want to see blown to bits. you make good americans look bad. shame on you.

so what if ronaldo’s fat?

he’s still the best.

maybe a lot of guys are jealous because he may not look fit (but i think he is or he wouldn’t be allowed to play) he plays football better than all those FIT and THIN players. hehe.
