Brazil-Chile Recap

September 10th, 2009 | By: Duvel | 9 Comments »

It was the Nilmar show last night. The Villarreal forward put three in the back of the net, and put Robinho on notice that there is a more than capable replacement for him within the squad. With four starters out last night I was expecting a lackluster display. However, this Brazil side showed off its depth beating a quality Chilean team 4-2.

Brazil went into the half up 2-1, with the lone Chilean goal coming from a PK given by a stupid tackle from Felipe Melo, who fouled Alexi Sanchez in the box. This was after Sanchez went right by the woeful Andre Santos. Andre Santos was caught sleeping several times in this match, coming up way too far forward chasing the ball without tracking back. Felipe Melo was later sent off in the second half for an absolutely reckless tackle. All he had to say after the match regarding the play was “football is for men.” I would like to see a little more humility from a man, who red card aside, had his worst performance in the yellow jersey.

The second half saw a 10 man Brazil responded in emphatic fashion to a Chilean equalizer. Dunga made very good use of his subs, bringing Elano on for Andre Santos, moving Dani Alves to left back. Diego Tardelli and Sandro came on for Adriano and Julio Baptista. The game really opened up after these three came into the match.

Brazil maintained their first place standing in the qualifying table, three points clear of Paraguay. The national team’s next match is away to the altitude of Bolivia on October 10th. Additionally, the Under 20 FIFA World Cup starts in two weeks. Brazil is loaded with talent, and I’ll get a preview posted on who to watch for in Egypt.

One question that came up on the message board was whether Brazil should basically call an entirely new team for the remaining qualifiers? I would like see to several players get a look, but not an completely new team. The positions that are up for grabs on the team are left back, right mid, and a couple of bench positions, most notably at keeper and forward. I would like to see Pato, Marcelo, Diego, Alex, Victor, Denilson, and Sandro all get a good look. I would love to hear any thoughts of what direction Dunga should go in the October matches.

Player Ratings:

Julio Cesar, 6.5, There was really nothing he could do to prevent the two goals.

Andre Santos, 5, See above comments

Miranda, 5.5, Looked shaky out there and was caught poorly marking on a couple of occasions.

Luisao, 6.5, He was mostly steady again last night.

Maicon, 7, Was sound on both ends of the pitch. Made a couple of great runs and played a brillant ball to Nilmar for a goal.

Gilberto Silva, 7.5, A very good performance. Made several outstanding tackles.

Felipe Melo, 3, Not a good night at all. Played like a man with no discipline.

Dani Alves, 6.5, Got the start at midfield and looked uncomfortable early on. Moved to left back where again he looked solid.

Nilmar, 9, The man of the match. Robinho had better watch out.

Julio Baptista, 6.5, Scored on a nice feed from Adriano. His passing wasn’t too great all night, which always is the case with him. Let’s face it, he is more of a forward than midfielder.

Adriano, 7.5, I thought he had a good game in his first start since the breakdown. Held the ball up very well.

i wonder why Felipe (Deportivo) is on the bench when the guy was on the la liga team 2008-09 obviously he was better than Marcelo (Real Madrid) Felipe Melo was complaining about being tired after the confederations cup maybe he needs to get used to fly back and forth to play for Brazil and Juventus if Dunga call Denilson (Arsenal) let’s just hope he doesn’t push Felipe Melo out of the selecao why keepers like Diego Alves (Ameria) or Rubinho (Palermo) have never given a chance to prove themselves i think they are way better than Doni (AS Roma) who is ijured anyway and Gomes (Tottenham Hotspur)i also would like to see Victor (GK) and Sandro (DMF) playing a little bit more before i can judge him but Andre Santos and Kleber cannot fly with the selecao to South Africa we migh as well take roberto Carlos with us (joke)

JC also made a brilliant save, nearly got to the PK and Felipe Melo gave up a ball which nearly cost Brasil another goal. Wouldn’t be surprised if Dunga is rethinking his starting spot.

Watching Dani Alves again last night, there is no question he should be starting. 6.5? He setup nearly all of the goals. He’s a brilliant playmaker w/ evil crosses and also had a laser shot from distance. Too valuable to sit on the bench all the time. Would love to see a back line of Maicon, Lucio, Luisao and Dani Alves.

Definitely would like to see Diego back up on the selecao. He’s in good form and deserves it.

Dunga made a call to Corinthians to check on the status of Ronaldo’s fitness. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him up in October the way he’d been killing it prior to his injury.

I’d also like to see Marcelo just to see what the kid’s got.

Nice recap. Good to see Nilmar get his place in the sun.

Left back position is definitely brazil’s Achilles heel.Andre Santos has not been impressive for the seleccao. Surprised that Filipe Luis wasn’t given a chance to prove his mettle. Fabio Aurelio has recently recovered from his injury and is another excellent option at left back. Marcelo hasn’t been too impressive for Madrid at left back so I am wary about his capability as a defensive player. Maybe he will actually do better in the national team since Cannavarro and Zambrotta were equally inept in defense while playing for Madrid.
For the right midfield, will like to see Diego and Ronaldinho take over that position. definitely not a fan of Ramires. The defensive midfield positions currently is solid comprising of Melo and Gilberto but currently I am wary about their back-ups in the event that one or both is injured or picks up a card. Not A BIG FAN OF LUCAS OR JOSUE. will like to see Dunga try Hernanes, Thiggo Motta, or Anderson. Denilson from arsenal seems to be too much of a finesse player to adequately fulfill the responsibility required in such a position. In the forward position, will pick Fabiano to start and then, Pato, Adriano and Ronaldo as subs (robinho not listed since he usually plays left midfield). Byn the way guys,am I the only one completely infatuated with Michel Bastos. (I felt the same way when I first saw Felipe Melo play so I know I am not crazy)

Thanks for the comments everyone. I gave Dani Alves the 6.5 just because I thought his performance in the midfield was a little average, even though he helped set up a couple of goals. I thought he looked better at left back. He did have a solid match all in all. I think the folks at Goal.com gave him a 7.

Regarding Michel Bastos…I have to admit I have not seen him play much. I’ll make it a priority to watch the Lyon-Fiorentina match next week to get a better look. I don’t know where he is on Dunga’s pecking order.

Forget the Chile match, I’m still amazed by Luis Fabiano’s’ goals against Argentina…http://www.lacelesteblog.com/?p=875

I was just wondering something… if it comes down to it and it matters what Brazil does in their last 2 games (or last game) in regards to whether Argentina will make it to the worldcup or not, will they consider throwing the game away? Or would that never enter the mind of the Brazilian team regardless of the rivalry with Argentina?

Another thing I was thinking about, it seems there are always a lot of complaints about Robinho’s performance. What if, hypothetically, you could choose between him and Robben for your left flank (winger position), or Elia. Would you do it? How about Nilmar for either of them? Just hypothetically speaking of course.

Here’s an idea about what you’d get in return:

Arjen Robben

Eljero Elia (new kid on the block)

Elia in action for Oranje, the last inch-perfect pass is his (Oranje is the name for our national team in case you didn’t know):

I like Sandro I was watching him intently when he came on. The little I saw of him I was impressed. He looks like a young Socrates but with more gumph in the tackle.

The thing you must understand about Robinhio is that if he plays well he is alot better then, Arjen Robben and Elia combined. When Robinhio clicks in a game he is amazing and a game changing player.

Bastos is playing well for Lyon. He was their direct replacement for Junihio if he plays well he should get a World Cup place.

Anderson finally scores for Manchester United aswell. Only took 2 and a half years! He must become more confident with his shooting.

LB should be Dani Alves’ position.

Diego needs to come in and Ramires should take over Gilberto Silva. Diego has been amazing at Juve so far. He was the best Brazilian last season anyway. I don’t really care about former bad performances. Robinhio constantly performs bad and gives one amazing game once in a while so, what’s the problem :P
