Brazil v. Italy

June 21, 2:30 P.M. Eastern
Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria, South Africa

The last time these two nations played was back in February with Brazil winning a friendly in a convincing 2-0 victory. Brazil is coming off a much improved performance against the United States. Italy was the latest team to find out how underrated the Egyptians are, losing 1-0 on Thursday.

As a result of their lost to Egypt, the Italians need to beat Brazil by a two goal margin, and the Egyptians need to beat the Americans by a three goal margin for Brazil not to qualify for the next round.

Since the Italians are going to be pressing forward, room should be open for the world’s most famous counterattack. Being forced to play an open match is something the Italians will struggle with and if our defense can replicate their performance against the United States, Brazil will have a chance to bury the Italians.

The weak link in this Italian side is undoubtedly its defense. Although coach Marcelo Lippi has started to integrate younger players into his plans, it has been a slow process, and the defense is not much changed from 2006. Maicon and Ramires should be running wild on Italian left back Fabio Grosso. Fabio Cannavaro’s play has declined dramatically and he should be exploitable in the center. Look for Kaka and Ramires to get on the score sheet tomorrow.

Rosters:

Italy:

Goalkeepers: Amelia (Palermo), Buffon (Juventus), De Sanctis (Galatasaray).

Defenders: Cannavaro (Juventus), Chiellini (Juventus), Dossena (Liverpool), Gamberini (Fiorentina), Grosso (Lione), Legrottaglie (Juventus), Santon (Inter), Zambrotta (Milan).

Midfielders: Camoranesi (Juventus), De Rossi (Roma), Gattuso (Milan), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Palombo (Sampdoria), Pirlo (Milan).

Forwards: Gilardino (Fiorentina), Iaquinta (Juventus), Pepe (Udinese), Quagliarella (Napoli), Rossi (Villarreal), Toni (Bayern Monaco).

Brazil:

Goalkeepers: Julio Cesar (Inter Milan), Gomes (Tottenham Hotspur), Victor (Gremio)

Defenders: Maicon (Inter Milan), Daniel Alves (Barcelona), Miranda (Sao Paulo), Juan (AS Roma), Lucio (Bayern Munich), Luisao (Benfica), Kleber (Internacional), Andre Santos (Corinthians)

Midfielders: Kleberson (Flamengo), Gilberto Silva (Panathinaikos), Josue (VfL Wolfsburg), Ramires (Cruzeiro), Elano (Manchester City), Felipe Melo (Fiorentina), Julio Baptista (AS Roma), Kaka (AC Milan)

Forwards: Alexandre Pato (AC Milan), Luis Fabiano (Sevilla), Nilmar (Internacional), Robinho (Manchester City)

Projected Starting XI: Julio Cesar, Maicon, Miranda, Lucio, Andre Santos, Felipe Melo, Gilberto Silva, Ramires, Kaka, Robinho, Luis Fabiano

Prediction: Brazil 2 – 1 Italy

Thanks for the comment Weston. I hated to write Italy and weak defense in the same sentence. The talent is there for this not to be the case, but Lippi needs to let go of the old guard. Dossena, Santon, Gamberini, and Marco Motta are all ready to contribute and when Lippi lets them, it will be back to the Italy we all know.

brasil only need a home advantage to let them win the world cup, so brasil2014 will probably be yours. but at the same time, we have some frighteningly good youth coming up so we will be even better than in 2006 when we get out of this terrible transition and lippi retires for good. just imagine:

…………..balotelli………….
……….giovinco.rossi…………
…….montolivo.ddr.aquilani…….
criscito.chiellini.santacroce.santon
……………amelia……………

subs:
acquafresca
marchisio
de ceglie
ariaudo
curci

when they play together in their prime even the best brasil would fall. what would brasil look like around then? i dont know much about the brasilian youth.

A 2014 Brazilian roster is nearly impossible to predict due to the depth the country has. It really depends on the development of some players currently on the squad, and maturation of the next up and coming group. Who the next manager is will affect the roster as well. If I had to make a guess now…

——————Robinho, Pato—————————–
Anderson/Douglas Costa, Hernanes, Sandro/Denilson, Kaka/Diego/Ramires
Marcelo/Fabio, Breno/Thiago Silva, Alex/Thiago Heleno, Rafael/Alves
——————-Renan/Doni———————————

But then you have guys like Neymar, Wellington, Dodo, Walter, Keirrison, Felipe Melo, Coutinho, not to mention countless others I’m leaving off. The only two players I would definitely say would start by then are Pato and Hernanes but that’s just me.

Brazil are now favorites to me to win this cup. I just can’t imagine Spain keeping their winning streak going, it has to end somewhere and Brazil is looking stronger and stronger. Especially Fabiano, he’s been more consistent this tournament so far than Torres who only had a good game the first game. Villa is of much lesser class, allthough he does get his goals in. Not that hard if you get that many chances.

Brazil’s speed and finishing is more fearsome then Spain’s now. Spain’s creativity and passing is better, possibly defense as well. It’s going to be interesting again. Great tournament so far. :)

Too bad there’s so much dead weight in the first group and not enough great teams present. :(

This was a great match for the team. If Felipe Melo plays like that against the Spanish, presuming we beat South Africa, they will not be able to operate in the midfield like they normally do. This could be a great final. Don’t count out the US giving the Spanish a strong match though.
