Brazil Squad Named For World Cup Qualifiers: Dunga’s Player Selection Looks To Be Improving. Plus The Return of the Emperor.
Dunga has picked his squad for the up and coming friendly matches with Canada and Venezuela, and world Cup Qualifying Matches verses Paraguay, and those lovely South American brothers of ours, Argentina.
So the squad announced is:
Goalkeepers: Julio Cesar (Inter Milan), Doni (AS Roma), Diego Alves (Almeria)
Defenders: Daniel Alves (Sevilla), Maicon (Inter Milan), Gilberto (Hertha Berlin), Marcelo (Real Madrid), Kleber (Santos), Lucio (Bayern Munich), Alex Costa (Chelsea), Juan (AS Roma), Luisao (Benfica)
Midfielders: Elano (Manchester City), Gilberto Silva (Arsenal), Mineiro (Hertha Berlin), Josue (VfL Wolfsburg), Anderson(Manchester United), Diego (Werder Bremen), Kaka (AC Milan)
Forwards: Adriano (Sao Paulo), Alexandre Pato (AC Milan), Julio Baptista (Real Madrid), Luis Fabiano (Sevilla), Rafael Sobis (Real Betis), Robinho (Real Madrid)
First things first I need to say welcome back Adriano, it’s been a rocky road but we’ve missed you. Hopefully this is the start of his resurgence and hopefully not what we’ve had to endure for 2 years. Anything close to his best and I think all Brazil fans will be partying like its 1999 or just plain be getting all frisky and start having orgasms (maybe that’s just me). All in all a good strong Adriano can strike fear into any opponent, and if he is anything like the 2005 Confederation Cup Final, all Argies should take cover.

A Brazil team without Vagner love is always a good team, and I think that Dunga defiantly has given up his weird and wacky scientific experiment of trying to use a mutant piece of shit like Vagner Love in making a world class strike force. The forward line-up looks strong and world class, with many weapons to choose from, such as Luis goal-machine Fabiano and the young Pato who would want to make an impression for the Seleção in his first World Cup Qualifier. Rafael Sobis has probably been selected for experience in the friendly matches for the up and coming Olympics as he won’t be playing the qualifying matches. In the future though I would like to see Fred given another chance, at least when he gets more first team football sorted out because he was also a very promising prospect which Dunga shouldn’t forget about.
Robinho for Brazil plays more of his natural position as a forward (like his old Santos days). Giving him more license to roam, to get forward in to the positions he craves on giving Brazil diverse attacking options.
The midfield on the other hand worries me especially with the amount of Defensive Midfielders in which Dunga likes to use. Gilberto Silva has gone of the way side a bit this past season, something Arsene Wenger seems to have realised at Arsenal, whilst players such as Mineiro or even Josué have heart and stamina, but I don’t think there what you call vintage Brazil players, a la Gerson, didi, falcao etc. The lack of creation in the bottom half of midfield is mainly the reason for the Breakup of play Brazil does suffer via crap passing and lack of support, this being the reason defence and attack seem so far apart. Manchester United’s Anderson( should be going to the Olympics) should definitely be tried out in Centre of midfield, where he has been having a good strong season for united playing there. That engine style player is what Brazil is in need of and is missing from the Middle of the park. Heck, I think Elano or Diego are the answer to play as the playmaker, both also can hustle and bustle around the midfield and play make for the forwards. Hopefully in the future we could see Dunga using creative central midfielders such as Hernanes of Sao Paulo (who should also be travelling to the Olympics) and maybe the emergence of Liverpools Lucas (Also going to the Olympics). Ronaldinho’s omission is pretty obvious in relation to his injury and fall from grace, so the attacking Midfield slots which will be occupied by Diego/ Elano/ Baptista alongside Kaka are pretty self explanatory. Kaka though looks to be a major doubt as he has had to undergo knee surgery so I don’t think he will be playing which is a major blow for the matches with Paraguay and Argentina. I would have though liked to see either Thiago Neves of Fluminense picked or Wagner picked from Cruzeiro instead of Baptista, who hasn’t wowed me since his Seville days, and who has been sort of here and there with Madrid this season.
Defensively I think Dunga has got it right most times (at least he never picked Roque Junior), and he knows who works well at the back, which is credit to him. Even though I am not the biggest fan of Maicon, he has earned his call-ups (hopefully this doesn’t last), and less than adequate performances by Daniel Alves has seen him start there often. The left back slot is still up for grabs as Roberto Carlos’s void still hasn’t been filled. Gilberto is not that adequate to hold the position for long and I think once Marcelo grows into his potential the Left Back slot is pretty much going to be his. For the time being Kleber should be given a shot down the left. Hopefully Dunga hasn’t forgotten about Cicinho who has been quite solid for Roma, if not that vintage. He is the closest thing to Cafu and his performances for Brazil have always been brilliant (confederations cup) and now I think for Roma he is getting back to sort of old self. If Daneil Alves can show some of his Seville performances for the National team then that’s another matter, maybe even incorporate him at Left-back would be a good option, but time will tell.
Hopefully dunga uses a 4-4-2 (4-2-2-2) instead of that awful 4-2-3-1 which I have come to notice during a few games. When Brazil play that system its pretty safe to say ‘shit ain’t gonna happen’ and Brazil are looking to play of the counter attack. The squad looks better than previously, mainly because up front finally looks Brazilian. The omission of an out of form Ronaldinho shouldn’t affect anything as his recent performances for the Seleção haven’t really set the house on fire so to speak. It should though be interesting to see if Alex Pato lights up proceedings in his first official matches for the senior national team. It will be intriguing also to see Adriano back for Brazil especially in the all important match against Argentina.
To end this post I think it only right to pay homage to the emperor who has worked back to getting himself back in the international fold. These ones for you Adri for all the good times and hopefully now more moments of beauty, enjoy.

Heh that name “Vagner Love” still cracks me up. Are you the only one that doesn’t hate Dunga? It seems to me that most Brazilian fans hate him. Nice posts by the way.

hey man, i love my team Brazil and i will always hold respect for Dunga becasue he was a fantstic playmaker we had, since he has left, the void of a central midfield enforcer who could pass the ball all over the pictch and dictate the tempo of mtches has been lacking, n in gerenerall in Brazilian football. We have also faced problems such as a lack of discipline, look at ronaldinho adriano etc, and i belive he does bring in those leadership qualites. I do agree with most Brazil fans that he is very inexperienced and tactically he does leave a lot to be desired, but i belive he is still building a great side slowly, brick by brick, which does infurate me, seeing as i belive i can probably pick a better squad than him at times. we will see if he stands the test of time and makes Brazil play samba soccer. i would though prefer a manager such as Luxemburgo or Zico to come in to provide us witht hat briallian touch

WELL I HOPE ADRI IMPROVES BECAUSE ADRIANO ALWAYS MURDERS THEM!

I think we will beat argentina we always do no argument about that but im worried that this time around it might be tight considering the recent results im predicting a 2:0 brazil win pato and adriano……….and in other news olympic squad officially anounnced.
Goalkeepers: Diego Alves (Almeria), Renan (Internacional)
Defenders: Rafinha (Schalke), Nei (Atletico Paranaense), Leonardo (Olympiacos), Filipe (Deportivo La Coruna), Alex Silva (Sao Paulo), Breno (Bayern Munich), Thiago Silva (Fluminese), Leo (Gremio)
Midfielders: Lucas Leiva (Liverpool), Hernanes (Sao Paulo), Ramires (Cruzeiro), Charles (Cruzeiro), Anderson (Manchester United), Diego (Werder Bremen), Thiago Neves (Fluminese)
Strikers: Robinho (Real Madrid), Pato (Milan), Sobis (Betis), Oldoni (Atletico Paranaense)
i think we are strong in attack and midfield but the backline worries me man i really love brazil and i hope we win it i will make sure i tune in to watch the games they will be on espn!

What happened to the Brazil football federation website. It has been down for weeks now. http://cbfnews.uol.com.br/
Do they have a different site

Vagner Love to me is more like Vagner hate. He is still young though.

Diego is no good. He is worse than Vagner Love. At least Vagner Love tried. Diego could not even get one pass on target. I have never been impressed with him never never and how I wish he proves me wrong. Dunga shouldn’t play him against Argentina. It is a shame Brazil could not score against a team playing with 10 men. Diego cannot take free kicks. He doesn’t know what he is doing. I hope Dunga work with Ronaldinho and Kaka to get them back. This team is berefit of ideas without them. A half fit kaka is better than Diego fully fit.

josimar unless your a huge idiot and never watch brazil games you would never say something that stupid, best player and mvp of the bundesliga twice in a row and one of our most talented young players second best only to kaka in his style of play real madrid are crying out for his signature!
DUMBASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!and i am so pissed off right now we lost 2-0 to paraguay.

Oh yea this is not the Bundesliga with their robot football. This is football at the international level. Thats how you prove how good you are. Diego has not proven to me that he can play at that level. Call me an idiot if you like and I can deal with that. However let Diego prove me wrong. He has never performed when given a chance. His passes were attrocious. Same thing he did in the Copa America so much so that Dunga took him off and use Elano in his place. He cannot make space for himself like Kaka and Ronaldinho. Also he doesn’t know how to take free kicks. If you play for Brazil I hold you up to high standards. Look at Wesley Sneider of Real Madrid. Are you watching him play for Holland, look at his passing his vision the ability to take freekicks. He looks like a Brazlian thats how I want to see Diego play and not try to fall down to get free kicks if an opposing player touches you. The bad thing about it he doesn’t know how to take free kicks.

yo dude i will formally apologize to you right now i was kinda having a bad day, but diego is an excellent player he may have not proven himself yet to dunga but in 2004 copa america he was great and him and adriano were arguably the best players i think he will prove himself he’ll come aroung but comparing him to love a mediocre player who couldn’t score ten goals in a top league if his life depended on it is just unlogical once again im sorry bro all brazil fans should get along.

and dude don’t you think dunga will get the ax? i think he deserves another chance but if we lose to argentian i think he will be gone! his defensive style is not working and frankly the game will be his verdict so i expect him to make major changes………..i predict brazil 3-1 victory what do you think?

Boss man you don’t have to apologize I don’t take things like that personal. However Diego is no good. He has never performed for Brazil when given a starting berth at least at the National Level. Playing for Santos Porto FC and Werder Brenem is different from playing at the National level. If you can’t perform at the National level you are not good because only the the best players perform at that Level. Look at the long haired guy from Paraguay. He has always performed. I have never seem him not perform. Diego on the other hand only performs when he comes on as a substitute e.g Copa America 2004. However whenever he starts he doesn’t perform. Remember this is Brazil. Brazil has the best players on the planet period. However Diego is a paper. Look at the match tell me one time you see Diego go past and opposing player and make space for himself. This is not England where once you can pass the ball you are considered great. Now you may wonder why I am only blaming Diego. Well he is the playmaker for the team he is the fulcrum of the team like Ronaldinho and Kaka. I guarantee you that had Kaka or Ronaldinho player they would not have lost.

Dunga is not good enough to coach Brazil. How will he stay in the Job. If Brazil loses to Argentina on Wednesday, Dunga should go.

I watched the game Brazil vs Canada at the beginning of the month. Brazil was just pathetic.. No midfield, no defense and the attack was in disarray… Canada had the bulk of the attacking threat.. I could not believe it.. It was a sorry state of the selecao..
Again, Dunga has been poor from the day he started, even the last Copa they beat Argentina but no game really.. no build up..
Will someone at the CBF wake up and find enother coach before it is too late?

yes indeed Dawlish it may be too late if the cbf do not at least give him a warning and tell him to win at least convincingly and no more embarrasing losses!

Mr Samuel LOL. I only hope you read this Diego came on as a substitute for Anderson and was himself substituted. If that is not an embarassment I don’t know know . Never let the hype about a player fool you, journalists hype up players to sell papers. You should look at a player within the context of a match and evaluate the player. Even though the Brazil Argentina match was a draw I think they were some positives. They completely neutralize Riquelme but they lack invention in the final third and that is where Kaka and Ronaldinho came in. No team can lose its best 2 players and perform like before unless somebody comes in that is just as good or is better. Diego is just not the player. He can’t go pass players with ease like kaka and Ronaldinho. Also on set pieces like freekicks and corners he doesn’t know what he is doing. Diego needs to go back to the drawing board and learn the finer points of the game. Look at Wesley Sneider from Holland he is guy of similar built to Diego. He is 23 like Diego but he is vastly better player.

I do not want to start a witch hunt against Dunga here… but Josimars this is again my point… Even when Ronaldinho was in form.. Dunga wanted to make the point that he was the one in charge he was not playing Ronnie.. So will he play Ronnie when in a few months Ronnie is back in shape..
For example why is Gilberto Silva playing? He lost form completely… even at Arsenal he is second string and Arsene Wenger is waiting for Gilberto to say the word and he is history but Dunga must play him.. Elano is much better but he does not play.. In attack.. Fred is coming back strong after injury but Dunga prefers one legged Adriano.. (Adriano’s game has been found out, he does not scare anyone anymore…) Afonso is good, J o is great and Brazil has talents to spare but the coach is bad, truth be told.. Dunga should go. The crowd made him and the CBF know that after the Argentina game.. hope someone can hear the chorus before it is too late. Argentina was the better side yesterday. Dunga must go yesterday.

Dunga is getting desperate and holding on to straws…Now he wants Ronnie to save his bacon…bY stating… we are protecting Ronnie..
Funny how he shunned Ronnie and Kaka when he took over , now he is in trouble he is looking for them to help him stay in the job… no Pride at all..
Time for Dunga to go..
Brazil does not win the Olympics and fails in the next WC qualifier in September even Ronnie, Kaka and the CBF cannot save him.. he should for the good of Brazil pack up and go to Italy. The Azzuri plays the kind of games he likes… He is of italian descent anywhay so maybe that explains it… not the Brazil type at all… CBF is definitely regretting they put him in charge i bet
