What if technology fails? Would you rather have a human to blame or technology? Replay images can help but I would not trust 'chip line' technology.

Zé, "Those kind of errors happen all the time, and all the time people create these conspiracy theories just because the matches are so damn important that even a simple slip creates a torrent of frustration from supporters"

in the past yes, all these errors could be acceptable, but now days, fifa allow these erros, take a look at italy game, a mistake at the end of 2nd half and not just that, football was not updated as others sports did in term of technology, that is why fifa dont talk about referees having suport from TV, where they can watch the replay in notime and and make the right call, to cancel a goal or to validate a goal or a penalty all dat in no time and pls dont put up the bs about it would take the importance of the referee, it would only help.

so that said, leaving the total control of anything to referee letting him alone to do self judgemend of the perception of what him see on pitch, is totaly nonsense meant to control how the games ends and meant to result on mistakes, anyone that dont agree with this is just blind or dont want to see the truth.

Bergo, I've been wondering the same thing, watching these games. What is it with FIFA and these outdated modes of refereeing? Other sports make use of the technology in the interest of a fairer game; it's about time FIFA started doing the same.

There are a lot of ways to think of the calls refs make, but even if that goal had been disallowed because of the offside, it would still be 2-0 for Brazil (and had Ronaldo not been called offside, it might be 3-0). The problem wasn't so much the calls as Ghana's bad luck with finishing. That Portugal/Netherlands game was atrocious though. I'd like know more about what was going on with the referee there. Thanks for these clips! I don't care what they say about Ronaldo, I love him.

chakan, i share some of your pessimism, but i doubt thins are as hopless as that. i already wrote here that i wasn't happy with the "beauty" of brs.'s game against ghana. but that doesn't mean they're not ready to win the cup. what i saw in that game was a calculated decision on parreira's part to paly on counters. it worked. had ghana scored and made it 1-1, which they could've done, and game kept on going on that score, i think we might've seen a different tactics from brs. but they saw it worked and they stuck to it. whem brs. desired to play fast and attacking football, tehy did; even if it lasted not too long -beginning of a 2nd half with japan. now, am i concerned about the coaching and some other stuff, of course, but then there's never been a wc when i didn't. in other words it's anormal reaction, at least for me, and i'm sure for many others as well. thing is, i see calculation, control and knowlage in parreira. ther ewas some of that in '02, '94, but wasn't in '98. brs. had good teams on all three occasions. big difference was that '94 '02 teams were more solid and balanced - defence-midfield- attack, etc - but teh'98 team was pretty messed up. it was the players pushing ahead on their individual talants. like i said i'm always concerned and nervous during any wc, but i was really uncomfortable during '98, and in the end the result justified my concerns. i'd like both beautifull game and a result every time but i can also make a compromise. look at it this way south american teams, well brs. and arg. still bring the most exiting football to world soccer. brs. being the n1.

bergo, i've, for a long time now wondered when fifa starts using comp. technology or whatever, so that refs make better calls, not on every small thing, but on those crucial moments that can decide the outcome of the match.

I think it's a shame that in 2006 that FIFA doesn't use the technology to support the referees (beside the Madonna headsets). As supporters we get al the details, replays from multiple angles including virtual lines to see wheter a call is good or not. Maybe someone can explain to me why FIFA is not leveradging technology for the good of the game. Maybe it's time to break FIFA's monopoly and bring some competition (which favours quality)!
