Can we really win?
The Selection (as we call our national team) is being considered one of the favourite teams to win in Germany. The team had an outstanding 2005, and we can read on international press how most soccer fans believe that Brazil is the team to beat. That’s only reasonable since we are the latest champions.
But Brazil is in great danger! Let me explain: since I was a little boy (Brazil was already 3 times champion) all other teams would play against Brazil as if their lives depended on it. And this happens even nowadays. So every time that we are on the green field it’s a glory hunt for the other players. For that reason we can’t expect any easy game.
The danger is within also! Whenever we have a very strong team like this, those high paid players seems to sit on their already achieved success and play under their real ability. Here in Brazil we call this effect “jogar de salto alto” (to play in high heels). We know that our coach is very concerned about this issue. They have expert psicologists to try to keep our players with their feet on the ground, but only God knows if it will be done.
I’ve heard some people saying that the greatest obstacle to our hexa (6th championship) is the high heel effect. Of course there are many good teams to challenge Brazil, but I agree when people here say that The Selection is it’s own main enemy. I believe that Brazil can win, if we can play seriously. We must be able to ignore our latest achievements at all costs and be humble in the field.
What do you think about that?

[...] This part of the interview is crucial to me. I am constantly warning everyone about the damage the high heel effect can do to us and the problems we had in the past with the ‘oba-oba’ mood among our players. He pointed out seven other teams that are eligible to the title, so if your team was mentioned, you can start to rejoice now. [...]

[...] I believe that in the past we really had that problem. The issue was not favoritism itself, but the overconfidence of the players before the games. There is no mystical (bad) aura surrounding the favorites. The problem is when the players start to believe that the victory is a sure thing. Now Parreira is very aware of the situation and the effect it already caused in past competitions. One of the most common questions reporters ask him is about the favorite status. Over and over again he said that this is an outside opinion and that favoritism does not win games. Many players share his opinion but no Brazilian fan would ever say that is not worried about this matter. [...]
