Dunga Names Next Month’s Squad
Dunga has named his 23 player squad for the upcoming qualifiers and Confederations Cup. There are several controversial omissions from this list that will not play well in the Brazilian media, most notably no Ronaldo, and no Ronaldinho. André Santos over Marcelo is a highly questionable choice. Alex of Chelsea FINALLY got a well deserved call, as did Nilmar who has been in sensational form for Internacional this year. Ramires of Cruzeiro is a talented young midfielder who I believe Dunga should give a hard look during the Confederations Cup. I’ll give Dunga some credit for taking what will likely be a rather experimental approach to the Confederations Cup. I would have liked to see a couple of more players who are on the fringe get a look, with Hernanes being the obvious example. Other than that and Marcelo’s omission I really don’t have too many problems with these selections.
Many would have liked to see Ronaldo get another opportunity, and that might still come. Nilmar has been consistently good and in form, and was more deserving of the opportunity at this moment.
Julio Cesar – Internazionale
Gomes – Tottenham
Victor – Grêmio
Maicon – Internazionale
Daniel Alves – Barcelona
Alex – Chelsea
Juan – Roma
Lúcio – Bayern de Munique
Luisão – Benfica
Kleber – Internacional
André Santos – Corinthians
Anderson – Manchester United
Gilberto Silva – Panathinaikos
Josué – Wolfsburg
Ramires – Cruzeiro
Elano – Manchester City
Felipe Melo – Fiorentina
Júlio Baptista – Roma
Kaká – Milan
Alexandre Pato – Milan
Luís Fabiano – Sevilla
Nilmar – Internacional
Robinho – Manchester City

I am right with you on this one although i feel Marcelo should of gotten the nod on the left instead of Kleber. his ommision of Ronaldo since Nilmar is in such phenomenal form but he needs to get a chance once more fit. Ronaldinho’s snub is ok. he hasnt been all that great for us since the Italy game, and how come Diego of Werder wasnt called up. Ramirez was good when he came on in the Olympics so that call i was happy to see.

Diego being excluded is Julio Baptista’s gain. I think Dunga likes being able to bring a scoring threat like Baptista off the bench if they are behind. Clearly Diego has had the better run of form, but you gotta figure Baptista gets left off if Diego gets the nod.

the player of this year should be tightly

Yeah i see your point Duvel, but Diego IMO is a much better player than Baptista will ever be.. i do see your case that the Beast is more of a scoring threat coming off the bench; Diego can be as well if Dunga uses him effectively. I just think Ronaldinho’s exclusion should of been Diego’s big break to get into Dunga’s good graces..

Robinho, if i had to nominate a player of the year for the Selecao it would be Inter’s Julio Cesar.. I’m a Milan fan but there’s no denying this man is incredible. his heroics for Club and country have been fantastic and he is the reason we managed to get by Italy; didnt get embarrased by Equador in Quito etc.., sometimes it seems like the man just wont conceed! Robinho would come a close second for his performances againts Ireland, Italy, Chile, Equador (Maracana) Canada & Venezeula.

Duvel, my Hiatus from Bleacher Report is finally over please check out my Recap of Brazils last season, my 5 choices for Player of the Season; and Opinion of Dunga’s latest squad call ups and the upcoming Confederations Cup. here’s the link: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/181989-selecao-season-recap-player-of-the-season-dungas-latest-call-ups?just_published=1

I agree that Julio Cesar is Brazil’s POY, with Elano probably a close second. There is a legitimate argument to be made that Julio Cesar was the best keeper in the world this year. He definitely is in the top 3.

Thanks Duvel, Julio certainly is the best in my eye.. but what did you think of my other nominations?

I put a comment on your BR article about the other nominations. I didn’t think Robinho should be there, and I put Maicon and Felipe Melo on the list.

Diego is probably brazils best- for this season. he has arguably playd than Kaka this season. Dunga should not expect playrs who hav not been in top 4m 2 perform miracles. lets b honest… ELANO, BAPTSTA, ROBINHO, FABIANO, DINHO and even Kaka hav not even been 50% at there best… DIEGO is a fit direct playr and should hav been first on that list. As i’ve said before diego will be fifa 1 soon…

SAMUEL intresting article, i assume u made yo choice concidrin only games playd 4 brazil and ignord club per4mnc?? if not i think only julio should b on th list

Hena you’re absolutely right i did it stricktly based on Selecao merit regardless of Club form. when it comes to club football Diego, Julio Cesar, Maicon & Pato have been the best.

The players i chose were those i believe have shown good consistency throughout the year with the Seleacao.. I know it cant please everyone but nothing can. although Diego has been fantastic for Bremen all year, to my amazement he suprisingly struggles to transfer & showcase that form in Brazil games. Dunga is utilizing him wrong.. that is why i left out Diego. a player I should have included when i think about it is Sevilla’s Luis Fabiano. he’s been poor for club but amazing for Country this campaign.

In 06 itali won th world cp not bcoz they had fancy playrs like Toti or 1s with a rosey histry eg Del piero, but bcz they had silent, fit, concistnt (inc club levl) CM like Perlo who could pic a clean pass… CDM Gatuso who would vgorsly stp any attk, LB lke Groso who could creep in th box and cause pandamnium! Brazils oponnts wil surely sit bk an dfnd lik france did 06, and our key playrs wil b the CM, CDM & a bit of CAM. Andersn, filipe melo, diego, our RB & LB wil b more importnt thn robinho, fabiano, dinho or evn R9. rmembr in th past 2 qalifiers even Kaka was caged by defndrs, filipe melo drove foward and scord…

Ramires has moved to Benfica

Thanks Joel for the news. When Dunga announced the squad the Ramires move had not been announced. This list came directly from the CBF website, but he has since then made the move, which is a great one in my opinion.

Good for Ramires, in a year or two if he impresses he should make a switch to the Serie A or Premier Leage..

Personally, I would of called up Diego/Hernanes. Kept Marcelo. It is not his fault for Real’s poor form of late. And try out Dani Alves as LB and Maicon on RB. Imagine these two players tearing up the wings. Or vice versa. You would need to teach one of them how to play on the left wing though. As Lucio is old I wouldn’t call up him and try out Alex and Thiago Silva together. My team would be :
Goalkeeper : Julio Ceser
Defence : LB : Dani Alves CB: Thiago Silva CB: Alex : RB: Maicon
Midfield : LM : Anderson CM : Hernanes CM : Kaka RM: Diego
Forward : Robinho Luis Fabianho
Subs : Julio Baptista, Elano, Doni, Melo, Pato etc
Reasons now. Both Hernanes and Anderson are really good at that last decisive past for mainly Lusi Fabianho and the other players if they get in good positions. Robinho, Diego, and Kaka are all players which can create brilliance out of nothing. Robinho has been on good form of late and Diego has played the best for any Brazilian this season. I feel without Ronaldinho he would play alot better. Trying out Alves/Maicon together would be good. Thiago Silva and Alex seem the new Brazilian 1st team Centre Backs for 2010 as I feel Juan/Lucio could not keep out with Torres/Messi/Aguero/Tevez/Villa/Rooney etc
I feel Baptista,Elano and Pato would be good impact players at right moments. Melo has played very well but I see him as a back up. I would chose Doni over Gomes (He is terrible) and I have no idea what Victor can do. Even though Elano has played well for Brazil constantly I feel they will have to replace him to reach the next level and be alot more consistent and dominant in games.
I would like to include Ronaldinho but, he must leave Milan and find a new team where he can re discover his form. I say move to Manchester City. Elano and Robinho could help. Better that then stay on the subs bench. As City are the only team most likely willing to fork big cash out for him.

Joel Brown, I am not totally agree on your formation. Dani Alves and Maicon both are RB. In term of defending Maicon better than Alves, but in term of attacking Alves better than Maicon. That’s why Dunga intended to use Alves as right wing and Maicon stays as RB. As LB, I have no idea on André Santos. But Marcelo and Fabio Aurelio of Liverpool will be my choice. Althought Lucio is aging but his experience that will help. As for Thiago Silva, he hasn’t play any first team match for Milan yet. But there are some better option of first team defenders out there, exp: David Luiz of Benfica, Henrique of Bayer Leverkusen and Douglas Franco of FC Twente. Luisao is good on air but slow definitely could not keep out the pacey striker like Messi or Torres. As for centre holding midfielder, i will opt for Felipe Melo and Hernanes. Hernanes definitely will add more attacking power and his long shot will be a threat. I think Dunga never try out Diego and Kaka combination. I believe it will works cause both playing very similar attacking football. But Dunga still prefers Elano cause he can helps on defence. As for foward definitely will be Robinho and Luis Fabiano at this moment. Pato, Nilmar and Keirrison same type of player, skillful and pacey but doesn’t have strong physical like Julio Baptista, Adriano and Luis Fabiano. I wonder why Dunga didn’t call up Grafite of VfL Wolfsburg. Victor is last year Brazilian league best goalkeeper. I really hope Ronaldihno and Adriano can find back their form before world cup. Both of them were amazing players when in top form. So below here is my formation;
Goalkeeper: Julio Cesar
Defence: LB: Fabio Aurelio CB: Lucio and Alex RB: Maicon
Defensive Midfielder: Hernanes and Felipe Melo
Attacking Midfielder: Kaka and Diego
Forward: Robinho and Luis Fabiano.

JOEL Brazil does nt use th ordinary 442. we use a modified verson with 2 defensiv mf and 2 attakn mf. i 100% agree with JZLIM 11 selecao.
dani alvs & Micon r RB. Anderson is a CM of defensv mf and NOT a winger.

Dunga has made the biggest mistake by not picking up ronaldo and ronaldinho in the team.
And by the looks of things Brazil will be the first team to be knoecked out of the tournament next year in South Africa
