Dunga Names Squad for Estonia Match

July 29th, 2009 | By: Duvel | 11 Comments »

Not too many changes from the Confederations Cup squad. I am little disappointed there were not a few more new call ups. This match is a warm up for the September qualifiers, so Dunga wanted to maintain a level of continuity in the team. However, due to the lesser quality of the opponent, it would have been nice to see some younger players get an opportunity. I was very surprised to see Pato not get called. This would have been the PERFECT match for him to start. In his place is Diego Tardelli, who is having a massive season for first place Atletico Mineiro, and he is the only new call up. Can’t help to think that if Ronaldo did not suffer a six weeks long injury recently that we could have seen him for this match.

Another quick bit of news. Barcelona completed a loan deal for Keirrison. He’ll play football this season at Benfica, where he should see a great deal of time on the pitch.

Goalkeepers: Julio Cesar (Inter), Gomes (Tottenham Hotspur)

Defenders: Andre Santos (Fenerbahce), Daniel Alves (Barcelona), Maicon (Inter), Marcelo (Real Madrid), Lucio (Inter), Luisao (Benfica), Miranda (Sao Paulo), Juan (AS Roma)

Midfielders: Elano (Manchester City), Felipe Melo (Juventus), Gilberto Silva (Panathinaikos), Josue (VfL Wolfsburg), Ramires (Benfica), Julio Baptista (AS Roma), Kaka (Real Madrid), Kleberson (Flamengo)

Forwards: Luis Fabiano (Sevilla), Nilmar (Villarreal), Robinho (Manchester City), Diego Tardelli (Atletico Mineiro).

Time to try out Diego =/ Scored on his debut for Juventus and fits in the team really well. I agree that Pato should be there over Diego Tardelli. I am pleased that Nilmar has moved to Villarreal. Him and Rossi will be epic. Elano has now moved to Galatasaray for 8 million pounds so he will get alot more time on the pitch. Gala might become a force in europe again with Rijkaard slowly rebuilding the team. The Spurs goalkeeper Gomes should not be there. He makes way to many mistakes. Thiago Silva should be there now that he is having starting time at Milan. Josue and Gilberto Silva should be replaced by Diego and Hernanes. Kleberson should be replaced by Ronaldinho which, I believe will rejuvenate his career at Milan with him being the star of the show due to Kaka leaving.

A few things, as I see them:

1) I’m glad Diego is out. He is good, but proved over the years to be a club player.

2)Ronaldinho Gaucho is out of the cup, unless he is able to have with Milan a season similar to his Barca years. I don’t see it happening.

3)At this point, this is pretty much the players going to the cup. Dunga has doubts only about the left-backs, the reserve forwards and reserve goalies.

4)Alex is an option with Dunga, but Miranda seems to have impressed him in the training sessions of Confederations Cup. Plus, the man is in the middle of the season now and, therefore is in better shape than Alex and Thiago Silva. Also given that he plays in Brazil, maybe somebody is getting some money to have him called and negotiated.

5)Dunga, as an ex-player, will always give credit to those who helped him lift titles, and this explains the few changes.

6) Who can replace Gilberto Silva? Hernanes is not in top shape, and people like Denilson are simply too young to be in a world cup. More than his playing, I believe Dunga is relying on his experience.

Thanks for the comments. I wasn’t stunned to see Alex left off. He is just coming back from injury, and Bruno makes a good point about Miranda being mid season fit. I think eventually you’ll see Thiago Silva and Alex both get looks if they are in good form this season. I also believe Ronaldinho is finished with the team.

Diego will be called up and will have to have a good role in the team if he has a large factor if Juventus win the Scudetto. Saame goes for Ronaldinho with Milan.

Duvel – do you really think Ronaldinho Gaucho is finished with the team? In being the focus of Milan’s attack this year, don’t you think he has another opportunity to prove himself? It seems to me that there is more room for improvement in the midfield.

Guindage – I think Ronaldinho might get the occasional call up the next couple of years. However, when I mean he’s done, I mean I would be surprised to see him making any significant contribution. This is a big, big season for him.

Louis – try this website for TV listings as we approach the 12th: livesoccertv.com, you should be able to find a way to watch the game there

The game was wonderful. I got to see it live in Estonia, A. Le Coq Arena. My opinion about Estonian football changed in a moment. They were surprisingly good. Brazil won of course but still, 1:0? Estonians really pushed our guys. Especially the guy, what was his name, Enar Jaager, he was a real pain in the a** for our forwarders. There were times that almost fights took place but nothing we haven’t seen before. Estonians were left with 10 players three minutes before ending but they still managed to break our attacks and do counter attacs. Of corse we didn’t do our best and weather and stadium was not what expected, but still, Estonians were really good. Brazil still rules!! :D
