Maradona’s bet on Brazil

April 7th, 2006 | By: Euler Costa | 12 Comments »

Wise Player While Kris and JP don’t say anything about Maradona’s thoughts on Brazil’s prospects to win this World Cup, I’d like to say something. He is absolutely right. Not about our chances to win, but to give the Argentinean players this kind of pressure. He is probably helping our neighbors to avoid the favoritism factor to play a major role against the Albicelestes.

I remember Pele saying that Brazil would not win in 2002. At that time I got a little angry but, to be honest, I think it helped to avoid the “oba-oba mood”. We were coming from that Ronaldo’s strange health disaster in 1998, but as fanatic as we are about football, that was just another reason for us to demand success in 2002.

Brazil is against the stream on this. It seems that all football celebrities have chosen Brazil as the “super-favorite”. Congratulations to the mind-games strategists! We are one step closer to lose this damn competition. Forza Emerson! My fingers are so crossed that I can bsrely typr.

Now all I can do is wait for a major football superstar to say that Brazil have no chance of winning. That would really make my winter. But, of course I’ll contest it anyway, with a slight grin on the corner of my lips.

Thanks Tanvir for the input on this matter, by the way. Too bad you were as ignored as the Kyoto Protocol by the American president.

I tend to agree that everyone is making Brasil way to much of a favorite for this World Cup. Lets be honest here in that Argentina tied for the South American group and Argentina lost 4 to 1 in the Confederations but had just beat Brasil 3 to 1 in qualifying. In the confederations Argentina did not have their A team or anything close. So the question is Why is Brasil such a favorite? The reason is number 10 of Barcelona. The world of today is caught up in the one person mentality and since Brasil has the best player in the world then they should win just like Jordon did for Chicago. The problem is that Futbol is much more of a team sport and I believe that Brasil is a little weak on defense and the Argentines are peaking at the right time. Look at Villareal and riquilme. Look how few goals Barcelona have scored lately without Messi? it is possible that Argentina have the 2 and 3 best players in the world and a good defense on top of that. Brasil you are not the super favorite but if you go into the cup thinking that you will be very dissapointed. Also remember that Messi was not around much for qualifying or Argentina would have probably won the south american group. How will you stop Messi, Tevez and Crespo getting feed by Riquelme. Not to mention the speedy Aimar. Brasil needs some younger faster defenders or this World Cup will be all Argentina.

You win Todd, Argentina is going to win this year. Congrats!!! Now keep in mind that Argentina is the new favorite team. I’m glad this weight is out of our shoulders. Our European legion is tired, fat and ugly and we will lose. Now can you chill out a little?

Relax Euler favorite isn’t always the worst position. The other teams are edgy about playing you guys which can be an advantage. Any of Brazil’s shortcomings in defense are pretty much made up for in firepower, hence their respect from other teams. In the Jordan reference I think a coach’s attitude and how he handles the number one position goes along way with the team and defusing the pressure. Phil Jackson was always cool and relaxed in the championships and that translates on down the line.

To be in Brazil’s position is terrible, because the others respect our team a lot, but at the same time they want to become heroes and will play all games as if it was a final game.

Anyone that win over our team will get a piece of glory, even if they don’t become champions. People never forget a win over us.

I agree that Brazil are under intense pressure. It is because they are favourites everyone wants to topple them and not let them play their game. All im going to say to the Brazil team is …watch out for your legs against Australia and Croatia. They will no doubt try to outmuscle brazil and put in heavy challenges.

Now if you really believe Maradonas comments than you are a special person. hahaha who do you really think Maradona think is going to win the world cup. He said it kind of sarcastically and half heartedly. But he also said it to basically give the Brazil team credit of their talent.

I wans’t there when he said that, so I can’t say what tone of voice and manner he said it. That’s why I waited to read about it in ARG blog.

Still, I believe that he said those things to remove pressure on the ARG team, and to drop their overconfidance. A smart move, if you want your team to win. But if you are saying that I’m wrong, than he wasn’t smart at all.

man, its ok euler. this guys are all in self denial. you guys all know that currently brazil has the best team. who cares if argentina has a great defense. or that it has a messi. can he be a great difference or make a presence in the front line like ronaldo??? there is no striker currently that can make such a presense in the front like ronaldo. what about the runs o kaka. or the physical strength of adriano. or better yet, ronaldinhos magic?? please. you guys say riquelme is really good. i totally agree, but can he become the best player in the world sometime soon?? all im trying to say is that argetina has a great team. but currently brazil is a step ahead from anyone. its a team that has playerSSS that can make a difference.

As we all know, not always the team with the best players win the WC. I have a feeling that a team such as Croatia, Serbia or Czech Republic will win.

It would be a pleasure to see nations with little World Cup tradition to win. I want Brazil to win again, but if we don’t get the trophy, I hope that a fresh team gets it.
