Minus 54 hours and counting

Brazilian supporters watching Argentina vs Cote d\'IvoireWe’re still two days from our starting match against Croatia on this World Cup, and the antecipation is already killing me. Seeing all the other teams performing well – including arch rivals Argentina – just increases the expectations for the opening game. This can be felt on the press around here too, as they’re running out of stuff to talk – first it was Ronaldo’s weight, then Ronaldo’s blisters, then Ronaldo’s headache, and finally Ronaldo’s discussion with the president, all mixed with Pelé opinions on basically everything from Ronaldinho’s height to comparisons to the 1970 team. The most recent issue was the main squad’s loss to the second squad on a training match (3 to 0) and how they think that indicates the team is keeping it on low gear because they’re also under antecipation for their first match, so I guess we’re not the only ones swimming in a sea of expectation.

In the meantime, I’m trying to work (as if that’s possible) and watching all group stage games on TV. What are you doing to pass the time until your country finally enters the stadium for their first match?

Well, I know what you are feeling because I’m in the same situation. I will mostly watch matches, analyzeing our opponents and discussing football with my friends. Also I’ll visit 5-6 football websites and get all the latest info. :)

Pretty anxious, GL, you’re gonna need it :) .

Zé, or anyone else who wants to help,

I have a favor to ask. (Sorry it’s off topic.) I’m trying to update Portuguese Wikipedia’s article on the US national team, which means I’m basically translating the extensive English Wikipedia article. Can somebody look over my translation and fix my awful Portuguese? :)

And then, of course, if anyone wants to do some more free translation or even write new content themselves, they’re most welcome.

Now on topic — I have plenty to worry about tomorrow with the US before Brasil even kicks off, but they are my second-favorite team (easy to say, but I have a lot of Brasilian friends from Boston) and I hope we can meet in the final instead of in the second round. :)

Philip – done so far. Thanks for doing the article, I’ve translated a few parts. God, I hate WP’s overedition syndrom, the “X-means-A-however-it-also-means-B-however-it-means-C-sometimes-however” endless chain.

Hey Zé!!!! Welcome!!! Thanks for accepting my invitation to blog for our team Brazil! I was rehearsing with my band all day so I was really glad to see that you are already active!

We are the writers of Brazil, the major powerhouse of football in this planet, so let’s keep the world well informed about the Brazilian experience in a World Cup.

Everyone! Meet Zé, from São Paulo. He will be helping me to write this blog, especially in the days Brazil will play. As you all know, I’ll be performing with my band at the Sugar Loaf, so Zé will write about the games. Not only about the games, naturally. He knows a lot about football so stay tuned!!!

Thanks again, Zé!!!!

I hate to wait while everyone is having football action! We watch the games and trash everyone.

The best game until now was the Argentine match. Mexico scored well too but I didn’t watch the game, so I don’t know if it was good.

England became joke material! Such great teams and players… the scores are surprisingly low to me. I hope Brazil do a better job.

What was Portugal??? After the first goal they gave up trying? No? Try HARDER then!!! Felipão must be mad!

I want to see if Italy will score only one goal as well. I doubt that, but who knows…

I in fact am not preoccupied with with the printed one, because in fact our selection is a piece of news in the world and one preoccupies all in selling, announcing everything that happens with the Brazilian selection and that is the player of the time of the unpleasant news. He is going to show in the field what really it is. What I saw the selections playing has not great volume of play, which can asustar and the Argentina that presented a more technical and integrated play.

Ze,

Thanks so much for the Wikipedia edits. I feel embarrassed that I messed up the gender so many times! But hopefully it’s becoming a better article so that people can learn about my nation’s team.

And I totally agree, WP suffers when it ends up like you said. That’s the problem with consensus — it’s hard to reach a solution that everyone can accept but no one feels like is favoring the other person.
