Mr. Presidente trusts Ronaldo

March 9th, 2006 | By: Euler Costa | 2 Comments »

Platini and Pele delivered some hard thoughts about Ronaldo. Zico and Parreira came to the rescue. Now our president came forward to say that Ronaldo have his support as well. Who? The president of Brazil Mr. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Is it strange? Not for us.

We always say that we are a nation of 170 million coaches. Since Lula came from the work party and has a simple background, it is normal that he is tuned in the most popular sport in the world. He likes to play a little match every week. If you remember my post about football aiding Haiti, you’ll see that he loves the sport. He is a very normal Brazilian, a working class man like most of us.

The Days of Ronaldo’s Life soap opera is already going too far. I think that the bald and the beautiful (game) drama is just unnecessary by now. He may be not so young anymore, but he still can be restless (ouch!). Of course the world wants him down and out this year. I liked when Platini said Henry was better than Ronaldo because of Zico’s response. Zico and Platini were the best players in their time and very respected figures in football history, but when the French step on Ronaldo’s toes our super Zico came to say some interesting things. Japan’s coach said that he would not like to face the “old and fat” Ronaldo. He was surprised to hear such criticism from Platini since he considered the French such a balanced minded man. Then he added: “Henry is a super player, but he isn’t better than Ronaldo. When he wins everything Ronaldo won maybe I can change my mind”.

Ronaldo’s career rose from the ashes in 2002, after that serious knee injury, and he can put his act together again until June. Maybe Spain doesn’t want him anymore, like a bubble gum that loses its flavor after chewing for a while than you toss it away. But our nation still loves him and we recognize the Wolverine power inside that guy. Lula trusts him. I can imagine our money printed with the words “In Ronaldo we trust”. He isn’t a God, but we trust him anyway.
