Player Profile: Emerson

I just saw an interview with our right back Emerson in channel SporTV and I felt it was a good time to write about him. You know my profiles, right? The facts and stats of his career I let you read in the links below, here I’ll write what I think about him. In top of everything I want to say that he is an honest man and dedicated professional, but since the Italians (and Europeans in general) are blaming Brazilians for everything that is bad in their football, I feel like supporting our players here.
Let’s begin with the ironies in his World Cup Career. After super Romario was dismissed from the 1998 squad in the last minute, Emerson was called to replace him. A super forward to be replaced by a midfielder defender? Nobody understood that decision… we got to the final then, but didn’t win. Then in 2002 he got injured while having fun in the goalkeeper’s position in training practice just before the Korea/Japan World Cup. Cafu replaced him as captain and lifted the trophy.
Of course this guy has some scars in his heart. While Italians were calling him il Puma for his fast moves and precise passes, he didn’t get the recognition of his own people. His style is not very appreciated here in Brazil, but he adapted very well in Italy, where he won the Italian Super Cup in 2001 and the Italian League in 2001 (Roma) and 2005 (Juventus). In this TV interview I saw him saying that everyone likes to be a top scorer and very few wants to sacrifice his game to help the forwards. Well, this year that will be his job: make sure ‘the quartet’ is well served. He also said that to play in Italy is not an easy task, but his previous experiences (Bayer Leverkusen) helped him.
Today he is one of the Brazilian soldiers in Germany. He is convinced that after 10 years serving Brazil’s Selection he doesn’t have anything to prove to anyone anymore. I disagree. Since he is in our dream team, he must show why he deserves to be there. If doing so he helps Parreira to bring victory to Brazil, even better.
Now his height and weight:
He is one the “Elected” in Bayer Leverkusen
He is among many Brazilians in the “Notable Players” at A. S. Roma
He is listed also among Juventus greatest players
