Presidente Lula Chimes in on Ronaldinho

lula Correction: Globo, Lance, and Goal.com’s story about Lula’s comments were misquoted. Not surprised.

Brazilian President Lula told the Associated Press in a wide-ranging interview on topics including Iran, that Ronaldinho “does not deserve to play in the World Cup.”

The President stated, “He is a player of great quality, but this is not enough. You need to see how each player fits into the development of selection. It is something greater than the individual player, is a group question. Ronaldinho does not deserve to go to the World Cup. He played quite a few times with the national team and was not decisive”

Unlike his predecessor, Lula is a huge fan of the seleção, who frequently gives his thoughts on the team. This comment came the day after former manager Mario Zagallo made similar comments regarding Dinho’s exclusion this summer.

Dunga is jealous of this man skills years back i a game when Ronnie was a teenager he embarrass Dunga who was on the opposing team and the brazilian tam captain Dunga has never gotten over it,if Brazil goes without Dinho i dont see one team that will be scared, for one they can be played man to man and no one draw double or triple team coverage now just think of the openings for the strikers Kaka is one tumble of getting injured and has been awful in La Liga the most over rated soccer player on the planet
  • gordon murphy
i think that dunga is completely insane if he leaves out ronaldihnio out of the squad for this world cup,and face it if the team doesnt goes very far, well the fans will put blame on dunga;but what reactions will the fans have.
  • Dwight davis
Dhino is still the most marked player in world football. If he was so washed up and averaged, why does he have three defenders surrounding him all the time? Do you think Kaka could use such help as he drives through midfield? I would. Dhino can only be great again if he has a team around him. His legacy lives on at Barsa. He brought them the beautiful game and his style is still evident there even two years after his departure. No Dhino, and every other team in RSA will be very happy!

I wish if the article below could reach the attention of Dunga. I don’t know what to say, because is not only in Brazilian DNA, but also a graduated soccer performer. Dunga and your followers please make impact to bring Dhino, we don’t mind your presence,Dhino will do the rest. Read below for matured soccer expects regarding Dhino. I don’t know why the truth hurts.
I think Brazil are on the right track but we have to be careful because the majority of the players have never played at a World Cup before, so there will be a lot of pressure and we must see how those players handle it," Pele said.
"If Ronaldinho keeps playing as he is now ... I believe he would be a good component because he could help when the younger players feel the pressure."
Ronaldinho, who last played for Brazil last April, has been in good form for AC Milan [this year but despite speculation about a return to the national team he appears out of Dunga's plans.
Brazil and fellow favourites Spain could expect tough opposition from the likes of Argentina, despite their poor qualifying campaign.
"Even (top) teams that are not in form like Argentina, who practically qualified in last place, we've got to respect them because they're a country accustomed to playing the World Cup," he said.
"Another country that had not been doing well but who in this World Cup will be a difficult country to beat is England, who can take a very strong team (to South Africa).
"They can reach the last four."

Sorry, I meant hungry (not angry) to win the Cup.
  • Haiti-Brasil
OK guys, no worries, its not a war (hehehe...)! TAU from RSA, don't get me wrong brother, when I said that Brazil won the Confed. Cup on your homesoil, it's just to emphasize that you could see first hand, closer than me the managerial credential of Dunga, the mental strength and the chemistry of his team. Coming from Haiti, a great black nation (despite our problems), I would not dare belittle your great nation which has born one of the greatest Men in human history (Nelson Mandela). You see, if Dunga's attitude towards Dinho was before the 2006 WC, I would be the fisrt person to "ask for his head". I just don't beleive (like Dunga) that his current "form" now in Milan (still far from what we know he can do) would make any difference in Dunga's fast counter attack system that requires good physical conditions. Dunga has shown that when you do the right mixing of COMMITTED, MOTIVATED , but still talented players (they are all Brazilians after all!!!) you can win games, even without superstars (e.g. Copa American 07 without Kaka..). I jsut think that his philosophy is in line with modern soccer. And I think also that Lula's comments reflect the opinion of some Brazilian fans who think that Brazil needs players willing NOT TO SHOW or SELL THEMSELVES, but angry to win a 6th WC for the country. We just happen to disagree on something that we are both passionate about, but we must respect each other.

Common guys no need to get personal, let's just keep civilized...anyway i hope R10 think real hard before signing an extension with AC Milan,i can't believe Milan didn't grab the first spot from Inter.I read an article on goal.com a while ago, they wanted to renew his contract but there's gonna be a major pay cut,he's doing OK this season,i hope he'll stay fit till the last game of the season.I wonder where he would be going in Europe if he has to leave Milan though...

Haiti-Brasil please open your eyes wider for the sake of truth. The literature review you compiled up does not elucidate why Dunga is messing up with Brazil by leaving Dinho for WC 2010. The fact that you are doing your doctoral research should not be barrier for you to research the hidden agendas between the two players( Dhino and exhausted Dunga). Please show respect to world cup first before you expect respect to anybody. You don’t have grounds to compare world cup and confederation cup (That is the evidence of being weak). RSA also won confederation cup (1998) and the same Dunga malaria took place in RSA,hence RSA is so struggling. With that uninterrupted attitude of Dunga Malawi (weak) and Mali (weak) will beat Brazil like nonentity. I will never obey Lula or whoever he is if he can’t apologize about favoritism which excludes and attenuates people towards their respected career and unenforced talent like Dhino. I am in RSA, the country which leads with justice; hence we deserve to hold WC with average soccer performance. Nothing is personal, I just want to enlarge Dunga spectrum for your own observation. If there is peace and harmony between the two why in the squad (Brazil) there are players (refer to the previous articles for the names) which are weaker than Ronaldinho, but qualified? Don’t you sense any tension as results of jealous working extra time in Dunga?
  • Haiti-Brasil
TAU from RSA, I might just ignore your disrecpectful comments given how busy I am in life. You want to be personal? Let me tell you this:soccer is my passion, it's what I spend my money on and it's what I do (playing for fun) when I am not working on my doctoral research. You think I am an idiot because I have a different opinion from your's? If you read carefully, you might notice that I am not in Brazil (my comments were posted from the US) and from Pachet5 comments, you would see that I am not Brazilian, but Haitian. However, since Pele and the superstars of his generation, the Brazilain national team became a global cultural heritage. In Haiti, we breathe football and nowhere else is the passion for the selecao greater than in that country (thousands take to the street when they win!). When did you start watching the WC and Brazil in particular? Since the epic team of 1970, Brazil has been playing beautiful football, but with a lack of tactical intelligence and rigor to win the WC. In 1982, I could not eat when the Brazil team (which was a "football poem" with Zico...) got eliminated by loosing 3-2 to Italy (with a more pragmatic approach). Same thing happened with the 1990 team vs Maradona's Argentina. They had to wait until 1994 where they played still good football, but with more defensive security with a system embodied by the leadership (and tactical intelligence) of the very Dunga that you arrogantly call an idiot and Mauro Silva. All I am saying is coach Dunga has proved over and over again that his system works without Dinho (e.g. the Confederation Cup he won on your homesoil), and it's unfair to think that the competitions he won are nothing. It's like people are telling me that Argentinians (with Messi) were not interested in winning the Copa America in 2007, or the Spaniards did not want to win the Confed. Cup??? He gave Dinho his chances many times , but it did not worked out. These are facts. He is the coach, he has always been (and is) a winner, and he knows what will work for his team and what will not. This is my opinion and if you thimk that makes me an idiot, you probably need to grow up.

P.s. Also, next time show some respect when you talk about the President of a Country who got elected by his citizens because of noticeable contributions to their society.
  • TAU FROM RSA
Brazilian President Lula is weakest President in the world including his wife. You cannot say a citizen does'nt deserve to present his country. That is to say the citizen is not Brazilian enough and that itself is a case. How can the whole president say that? Lula do you think you deserve to emerge as the Brazilian president for 2010 world cup in democratically exposed RSA? Or you feel to hide yourself somewhere in California based on your current attitude towards Ronaldino. How did you become a president if you have favorites amongst your citizens?I just viewed your photo from net, You are just a monster who is willing to victimize some of citizens for the sake of fame.
  • TAU FROM RSA
Haiti, I must say once more that all people who think that Dunga thought majestically to ignore Ronadhino are idiots and weak including you. I am not sure if you are truthful when you say you are in Brazil, because you sound as if you hate Brazil like Dunga. The Strong citizens of a country know their weak point. I am flabbergasted to realize that the strongest team in the world doesn’t know that Dunga is their weak point. Dunga WILL NEVER MAKE IT. YOU CAN’T LEAVE OUT VETERAN IN CHARGE FOR SUCH EVENT AND BRING LOT OF WEAK LEARNING SOCCEER STUDENTS TO WOLRD CUP. The must be people who can keep shape and pace permanently without yell of coach like Dhino. To coach does not need headache after game or huge noise during the game as per anticipations of Dunga in 2010 WC. What is required is to get players with informed perspective and enough soccer vocabulary to always in advance keep things in order like Dinho. Haiti you hate you own country. You cannot afford to win based on fortune.
  • Pachet5@hotmail.com
Haiti-Brazil now you're blaming R10 for the Champions League catastrophe? when was the last time you took a good look at Milan's squad? they have a crappy squad but they still in 2nd position in Serie A, R10 is the lead assists in Serie A, i mean common, give the guy some credit...now i'm not saying you're wrong about R10 not beeing 100% fit for the selecao but having players like Julio Baptista and Ramires instead of him is the real issue, that's why people are going crazy about it,a one legged R10 is better then J. Batista and Ramires combine,Ramires is playing in Portugal how stong is the Portuguese league? J. Baptista is a subtitute in Roma if Serie A is not that good (like you said) and J. Baptista can't be a regular starter then why would J. Baptista be in the picking order ahead of Dinho, bro ?
P.S. : i'm also a Haitian-American just like you,i hope more of us will join the site.....talk later my dude
  • Haiti-Brasil
I am with President Lula (a clever Man) and others who think that he should not go. Guys it's not politics or feelings, like "Dunga doesn't like Dinho" or "Dunga is jealous of Dinho's skill...". Ridiculous comments. Dunga is a great champion in his own right!! Beside the group cohesion issue (he is a partier), Dinho IS NOT as fit as you think to play in the WC. Some people still think that the serie A is the best (or toughest) league in the world. NO!! Not anymore!! So make an effort to judge the player not againts some relatively easy teams in the serie A only, but in other venues like the Champions league and his performance in the Selecao over the past 4 years!! Dunga's system needs a play maker who is physically fit, WHO CAN RUN PASS PLAYERS to deliver the ball. Not just playing long balls which most of the time don't reach their targets!
  • I got the original story from Globo. I was surprised Lula would say that so I guess the correction makes sense.
  • Globo are now saying that goal.com misinterpreted Lula's comments, and that Lula didn't actually say Ronaldinho shouldn't go:

    http://globoesporte.globo.com/Esportes/Noticias/Futebol/0,,MUL1525738-17852,00-ERRATA+PRESIDENTE+LULA+NAO+DISSE+RONALDINHO+NAO+MERECE+JOGAR+A+COPA.html
  • Lula is also a Timao, which means great minds think alike :D.

Gaucho...gozo o mundial dos confortos de seu barra.

    y Adriano...favela :D
  • Thats harsh Nathan, espcially since 90 percent of people on here want Dinho back on the team.
  • i think that he will suprize all you idiots he will perform well he know what he needs to do so lay off the star
  • Black Matt
Aw, I was hoping to hear Lula say "Is Ronaldinho partying, or isn't he?"
