Quarter finals, here we go

June 27th, 2006 | By: Zé Fernando | 22 Comments »

As usual against my predictions, France has defeated Spain by 3 to 1, and they’re playing Brazil next. This World Cup is now getting into its quarter finals, and there is no more fooling around anymore.

All quarter finals matches are already World Cup classics given the teams involved. And, to be honest, many of them are still strong contenders for the World Cup title — every match will be a tough battle, and predicting the outcome of each match in advance will be impossible. To me, the result of the Spain and France match has just proved it.

Next saturday, when Brazil plays France, it will be impossible not to feel some of the post-1998 finals vibe. Brazil will want vengeance for that defeat, and France will want to be stomping Brazil yet again. Both teams will be pretty pumped for that, and the clash should make an entertaining match.

Vin, I totally agree with you that Brazil is bound to lose on European soil this World Cup. However, I honestly think that will come against Germany in the final. Watching the Germans on their home turf. . .they simply seem invinsible. I hope I’m wrong.

Keep talking, Vinnie. France is up, and I sense a nice rematch.

They’ve met since ‘98, but not in the World Cup. This should be VERY interesting.

It was good to see Zidane knock out all those whiny “teammates” from Real Madrid. Now only the hard-working and focused Real players remain. Well…almost, I guess. Roberto Carlos can be a bit of a slacker sometimes :)

Should be a good game. France’s defense and midfield play looked very very good agaist a not too shabby Spain side.

France could do it…

Still think Brazil wins the match. Rooting for France though.

The Brasil team play today is not of WC quality. Poor defense in the mid-field and at the top of the box with large open spaces between the defenders that a good team can exploit. Next no one wanted to pass to the open player in front of the goal. Adriano, Cafu, Roberto Carlos all had excellent chances to pass and for Brasil to score but they wanted the goal for themselves and so the team did not get it.

France played an inspired game today. They have an experienced team, so the quarter final matchup between France and Brasil should be a very interesting game.

Can Brazil please, please, please drop the following players because they are actually not very good any longer:

1. Roberto Carlos
2. Emerson
3. Adriano

Ronaldo is at least trying now after an appalling start to the tournament. Here’s hoping Robinho’s fit against France to replace that lumbering oaf Adriano. The ball hits off his leg, in an offside position, and he celebrates like it’s a 30 yarder? Pah!

If Roberto Carlos plays against France Ribery will have a field day and take him to the cleaners.

I also don’t see why Emerson keeps getting picked ahead of Gilberto Silva?? It’s crazy.

I do agree that Brazil was not playing its 100%, especially on the defense, but I would like to add that France seemed to give a lot yet without the heartstopping opportunities in needed in the front. Seems like French will have their toughest game of the match next time!

;)

This game said a lot… Parreira silenced any critics about sticking with Ronaldo, if there were any left after the Japan game. Adriano showed his selfishness and why a healthy Robinho should play in his spot. Cafu and Roberto Carlos also showed they were thinking more about records instead of the team. I think the look of disbelief on Ronaldinho’s face wide open in front of the goal says it all; bring in the Japan starting line-up and bench the old timers. I was on their side when the WC began, but there is no denying the difference in play with the younger TEAM vice the older individuals. As for old timers, France doesn’t stand a chance against Cicinho, Kaka, Juninho, Ronaldinho, Robinho, and Ronaldo.

While I have managed to control my blood
pressure well over two weeks in to this WC,
my anxiety/anger/intensity level went up about
100 times when I saw some of the same French players from ‘98 celebrating today.
Saturday’s game is total war. Losing three
straight WC knockout games to France is
simply not acceptable - win or don’t bother
coming home.

I think some of you are missing a real possibility here when you bash Cafu (and others) for supposedly being selfish in front of the goal. I think some of those last one-on-one goal chances were flubbed on purpose to help Ghana save some face. They were a badly beaten team, and had more or less given up defending the goal in the waning minutes. It looked to me like Cafu and at least one other player in the final minutes with clear shots on goal kicked the ball into the waiting arms of the goalie. 3-0 was enough. No need to run it up on Ghana. If that’s what happened, it’s an amazing show of sportsmanship!

Wow, John, you really trust our players. I just can’t imagine anyone giving up a chance to score in a World Cup on purpose. It would be nice, obviously, but I believe it is a bit unrealistic.

Vin, you keep your fingers crossed! He he he. You would not want a Brazil - Italy final? Why?

If Cafu was trying to be a good sport by taking that shot, then Ronaldinho didn’t know the plan… He was visibly angry and I don’t blame him. We can’t have that against France. It is pay back time.

i think some of the players of Brazil wanted to score some goals on their own since they have 3 goals already. but i dont think that if they have that advantage, they will just gie up a goal by showing sportmanship.

ronaldhino could have scored a goal asisted by cafu. ronaldo could have scored 2 more goals if adriano passed it to him.

i wish they wouldn’t think about their own goals but for the team.

Go Brazil!

things may not be going right for the brazillian players but lets not forget they are the ones in the middle of the fire, while the rest of us are feeling the heat from the stands or our seats at home.I still support brazil and just becoz they are not what we are expecting of them we have totally no right to bash the players. They go into that field wanting to win whichever way.Why bash a player for an off side goal what is the work of the referee, the players job is to score and if its offside and the referee doesnt make the right decision so what should the player do, adriano did his best and i believe some of us given chance to play with brazil(like ghana) for some time we would be awed,i mean to be along side the r’s and no’s of brazil.Lets keep our expectations low, the players themselves never said they will win the cup, infact they say they will work hard to win.Sometimes you wake up and the day is just not yours then you have to make the best with what you have and how the day is.Chao

BEAT FRANCE 3:0 IN Q-FINAL.
France will return back the 1998 final as brazilian fixed match for France to Champion at home. Zidane first header into goal R.Carlos JUMP and let the ball thru 1:0 ! This time Barthez will be busy to catch the ball inside the net!!
