Romario’s fate to be decided today

March 29th, 2006 | By: Euler Costa | 5 Comments »

Romario and coach Renato Newspaper reports says Romario will meet with Vasco’s president Eurico Miranda today to resolve his situation with the Club. For 13 days now he did not show up at the club and he didn’t say anything either.

All started when he missed 3 days of training before a classic game (Vasco x Flamengo) and the coach decided he wouldn’t play. He got angry and left.

Later today or tomorrow I’ll give you the outcome of the meeting. I know that this is not WC material, but I believe Romario deserves to be mentioned here.

Miami FC, the new USL First Division franchise, announced the signing of the second leading scorer in world soccer history and 1994 World Cup Champion from Brazil, Romario de Souza Faria (“Romario”), as its star striker for its inaugural season.

Romario, known in Brazil as “Baixinho” (“Shorty” in Portuguese), has had a prolific professional career. Romario became a national hero when he played a key role in helping Brazil win the 1994 World Cup in the United States. He was named the Best Player of that World Cup and received the “Golden Ball” for his efforts.

Romario also went on to win the “FIFA Player of the Year Award” that same year. In addition to the World Cup, Romario won the 1989 and 1997 Copas Americas with the Brazilian National Team. During his 21-year career, Romario has played for several of the top clubs in the world including Vasco da Gama, Flamengo, Fluminense, PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona and Valencia.

Romario arrives to Miami FC fresh off of being the leading scorer in the 2005 Brazilian Championship in which he scored 22 goals for Vasco da Gama. Boasting a total of 964 career goals, Romario is rapidly approaching the magical number of 1,000, a feat which only “The King” Pelé has achieved.

Good luck GOD ROMARIO!!!

well - I have been a fan of Brazil since 1970 - I am 46 years old - Romario is 40? - and just saw that romario scored 3 goals with Miami the game was on FSC on sunday. I add here that I was at the Rose Bowl for the semi and the final in ‘94 - Romario scored a goal in the semi aganist sweden to put them through to the final. It is a strange journey he has been on to be sure but I guess that is the way it is in football - at least he can play still and make a living - unlike Maradonna who crammed his fame up his nose. The hand of god my a.. At least Romario’s legend includes bringing the cup back to brazil after all those heart wrenching loses in 78, 82, 86 and 90. Had he been able to play in 98 maybe they would have won And he played with heart and passion, and with self interset for sure, but the tears they shed as they ran around that pitch in 1994 were for those who loved the brazil team for all they bring to the game. There is a lot to be said that perhaps todays game is too hyped and its players are over paid, and the expectations are so high. Look at the pressure on Ronaldo, they say he is fat and I bet his body fat percentage is no more than 10%. God bless romario and may his legacy live in the hearts of those who have loved this team and shed many tears with loses of the past and the glorious cup of 94 - and again in 2002 - and the tears of joy to come when we take Argentina down in the semi and germany in the final!!!!

Great comment Dan! I’m glad to know that Romario is really scoring in the US. I am very surprised on the high number of Americans becoming ’soccer’ fans these days. The classic TV shows like David Letterman’s are still putting the sport down, but I read all the time comments made by Americans that are really in love with the game.

Thanks for the Romario update and for reading the Brazilian blog!!! One more time a great text from you, my friend!

Euler - hello from San diego - did you read my other blog from the game? id did not realize that the two pages were related. Thank you for your reply. I hope you can feel my hug of friendship all the way from here as I sense if we were to meet we could talk and share stories and a few tears for hours. I am a sports fan of US football but soccer and specially Brazil is different - it is in the heart and soul -very diffent than love for my San Diego Chargers and american football. It is a different sport for sure. Please visit my website and send me an e-mail. Let’s see how the bracket lines up this week and the game on Thursday. What happened to Bebeto, Dennilson and Rivaldo - why were they not on the team? I would like to ask you many questions about the history of the team and what happend over the years, We are not connected here - more now than before but I want to know about this team - fill in the gaps. I look foward to hearing from you again. In friendship, Dan
