Ronaldinho or Kaka? Barça or Milan?

April 26th, 2006 | By: Euler Costa | 14 Comments »

Barça x Milan I was watching that dreadful game (Villareal vs. Arsenal) when I remembered that ancient question: what is a better team, the ugly defending type or the beautiful attacking type? Again I answered to myself: the best team is the one that wins.

I thought that Villareal would win, because it is impossible to defend for 90 minutes without surrendering at least one goal. I was sad to see Villareal being incompetent to score after so many clear chances. But while the game went on, I started to root for Arsenal. If they should keep that shameless display of cowardice, we would be able to watch this style fall apart against a great offensive team like Barcelona or Milan. I like Kaka and their Brazilian mates, but I would love to watch Barça playing against Arsenal.

After the 1994 World Cup final many people were glad to state that the beautiful game days were unquestionably over. Now the same reporters are bowing to Ronaldinho’s talent. Of course I don’t blame any of them. People can only write what they see, and that World Cup was not as beautiful as it could be. Anyway, people can’t expect Brazil to stop producing football legends, but many still do, naturally.

Now we will see these two super teams meet again, Milan and Barcelona. I already wrote a lot about them and I have very few things to add this time. I would like to warn them all about Gilberto Silva, one of the merciless defenders of the Arsenal team. The guy was unstoppable!

My heart will be divided, since there are 5 Brazilian men in A.C. Milan and another 4 in F.C. Barcelona. I will pray that we can watch a spectacular display of great football as usual. It would be nice to see Ronaldinho against the Arsenal’s wall (of shame), but if Milan wins, maybe Cafu and Kaka will be able to bend them as well.

Remember what I said about injuries? Cafu, Kaka and Ronaldinho are going to play tomorrow, as far as I know. They are all aiming for the Champions League, of course. After that they will aim the World Cup, and remember: I told you so!

. . . . . . . . . . . . .

Ronaldinho’s opinion: “We made a good start with our performance in Milan, but now we have to use our heads and put that behind us. We’ll be going out to play our usual game - we play to win. We know this one will be a tense game and probably end up tougher than the San Siro match.”

Frank Rijkaard’s opinion: “We’ll have to be prepared to face a great Milan side who will be determined to turn the first leg result around. We know that and we know we have to do our job well. It’ll be a real fight.”

Carlo Ancelotti’s opinion: “My players are all charged up and very motivated to win.. We’ve not come here just to stop Barça playing, but rather to develop our own game, for which we’ll need courage and personality.”

BBC about Gilberto Silva: “Mention must also be made of Brazilian midfielder Gilberto Silva. He was superb in Villarreal on Tuesday and his defensive midfield displays have negated the loss of Partick Vieira - a considerable achievement.”

Before you get anymore misty eyed about Brazilian players remember Real Madrid had Ronaldo, Robinho, R.Carlos, Baptista, Cicinho against Arsenal and they were outplayed and couldn’t score a goal in two games.
And if you watched the Milan-Lyon CL quarterfinal Lyon were the better team, Milan scrapped through and Kaka was anonymous.

I believe you, but I also believe in Barça’s fire power. About Lyon, they have a great bunch of Brazilians too, so… he he he, no harm pionting that out, right?

I hope Barcelona win today to show how to dismantle a strong defensive team like Arsenal. At least I hope it can be done. My eyes got hurt watching Arsenal playing yesterday.

“Strong defensive team like Arsenal”…????? Which Arsenal, surely not the one we watched yesterday?

Villareal did not score, not because of the defense, but because they were not able to finish in front of the net. It was heartbreaking to watch. Sooooomany bad passes from midfield, sooooo much lack of communication with the forwards…I was hoping for a Villareal victory, but my God!..Arsenal did not deserve it either.

I hope todays game is better than the first leg.

Well, they kept the whole team behind the midfield line, would you not call that a strong defense?

I agree that Villareal was persistant, but unable to score. But I think I’ve never seen a team so scared and packed behind like that. I was wishing Villareal to score, to punish Arsenal’s behaviour, but they failed.

Today I’ll see what can we expect from Milan or Barça to punish Arsenal.

Villa kept themselves behind the midfield line by continuing to pass the ball in the wrong direction.

Arsenal played terrible, no support for Henry. I also hope for a good game today. But Barca might shut down to keep the advantage. Who’s do you hope to win Euler. I kind of hope Milan. I love Barca but I really like Kaka’s style and hope to see him perform.

I hope to see Barça beautiful game against the ugly Arsenal. Milan is great and Kaka is phenomenal, but I would like to watch Ronaldinho inventing moves against those stiffed English players.

I guarantee that Arsenal will play a much more attacking style in the final. Their normal style of play is much more fluid and passing-oriented. Barca v. Arsenal would make for a very entertaining match.

Yesterday was all about doing what had to be done.

Doing what had to be done is no excuse. At least for Brazilian taste… that wasn’t football, that was torture.

First half is over, now I can breath a little. Everyone hunting the goal like crazy! That’s what I call football.
