Ronaldo’s Soul Must Be Saved

May 11th, 2006 | By: Euler Costa | 9 Comments »

Hole in Chest Ronaldo conceded an interview to the ‘O Globo’ reporter Priscilla Guilayn yesterday. He is still recovering from a thigh muscle injury. As many already declared his football is completely gone, Parreira still trusts he will rock the World Cup this year again. Only a few people still believe he will score, since Ronaldinho will be there to assure precision passes. The interview is too long to be completely translated here, so I will select for you the good and polemical stuff.

Injury: “The lesion was small, but it’s not fully healed yet, so I’ll slow down my training here in Spain. I won’t go to Brazil now. I surely will be in full physical conditions to play the tournament, but it’s almost like beginning from scratch. I hope nothing happens during the World Cup. But I’ll have about 10 days to practice”.

Gerd Müller’s record: “I wish. I hope to break it. The main goal is not to be the top scorer of the World Cup history, but if I get that it will be an honor and I will be two times happier. The main goal is the title”.

Favoritism: “We have the numbers in our favor, but this favoritism is an incredible trap. All other teams are pushing away their responsibilities and to Brazil. That won’t affect us. The Seleção is very well prepared and that’s why it is the best team, because we enter the pitch without pressure”.

Pressure: “The pressure is what makes us the best in the world. The responsibility of knowing that second place is synonym of failure. We face this pressure with serenity”.

Other teams: “All teams will fight for the title, but I don’t think there will be any surprises to the round of sixteen or even to the quarter finals”.

Spain? “There are no easy games, we must be ready. I know all the Spanish players but we don’t worry about the others. Our main preoccupation is with our physical and mental preparation, to do well what we know, to play football”.

Crisis in Real: “The relationship among the players may be not as good as we have in the Seleção, but we have a good environment and we respect each other and we help each other too. There were never conflicts of arguments. There is room for improvement… I would like to speak out but if I reveal something here, instead of helping I would be feeding some polemics. We know sometimes all the pressure falls over only one or two players. What happens is that a bad management affects the good environment of the team and harms the level of the game. We hope things at Real Madrid gets better as soon as possible”.

Will you stay? “I said a thousand times already, I would like to triumph here, but if they don’t want me to stay, I don’t want to be a burden”.

Best Fans: “The Cruzeiro fans were the best, most active. I was 16… it seems like yesterday. Even loosing they would chant and cheer to the end. But I can’t compare with Real’s or Barcelona’s, they’re all different”.

Barcelona vs. Arsenal: “Barcelona, maybe, for the friends I have there, it would be very important for them. But the truth is that I don’t have any preferences there and maybe I don’t even watch the game”.

Friends Zidane or Ronaldo? “Every comparison is stupid. Zidane and I play in different positions. I was very proud to play with him. He is an amazing person. We did very nice things at the ONU and I wish to keep doing because the four editions of the Ronaldo’s Friends vs. Zidane’s Friends games were a huge success. It’s a shame that he retires from football, but each person knows when his time comes.

After reading all this I begin to agree that we are doomed. Ten days? What? He doesn’t want to see Ronaldinho playing against Arsenal? Whaaat??? He must have a hole inside his heart and I’m not sure if Parreira can heal it in time for the World Cup. No wonder he was giving this interview along with his mother.

He is an important piece in Parreira’s mind. Now he must drink the juice of the Seleção Spirit as soon as possible. Wake up Parreira! Go rescue that scared and lonely guy from the hands of the ‘evil managers’ of Real Madrid and his black hearted fan minions before its too late and his soul is forever doomed. Keep in mind that “second place is synonym of failure”!

Oh, by the way, he was there to advertise his new website (not working yet, like him): http://www.worldofronaldo.com/uk.htm

I believe in the guy! He had as many comebacks as Cher and he is poison to do it one more time. Like people say in Brazil “Jogo e’ jogo, treino e’ treino” (things play out differently when is game time), the same holds true for the World Cup finals. Once he puts the “canarinha” on and walks in to the pitch side by side with the guys that share the same pride of being part of the Brazilian national team, he will perform…just like he did in 02.

[...] World Class - As much as I’m obsessed with words and thoroghly enjoy a good read, I’m also rather fond of quality photography. James Ferguson’s World Class: An Illustrated History of Caribbean Football boasts both fine words and excellent illustrations. I received mine in the post this morning, most pleased. Whether you’re a die-hard Warrior fan or just have a passing interest in Caribbean History, you’ll find something worthwhile in this book. [...]
