Ronaldo’s friends vs Zidane’s friends

Zidane and RonaldoBrazil plays against France tomorrow, as a mini-revival of the 1998 World Cup Finals, when Zidane was the team’s head in Brazil’s defeat to France by 3-0. Pelé, slightly controversial as usual, bets on a French victory, and makes Roberto Carlos pretty upset.

Well, despite the general “revenge for 1998!” feeling going on right now among Brazilians (denied by the players themselves), the biggest pre-game talk, as usual, is about the team’s lineup; people are still heavily skeptical with the current team (while Roberto Carlos, on the other hand, is pretty satisfied with it).

Robinho has already trained normally and it’s 100% back from his injury. Will he be back to the main starting lineup, as against Japan? If I know Parreira, I’d say “hardly” – he will probably come in after 70 minutes again. I can also say that 11 out of each 10 Brazilians want to see him there.

The same question can be asked for Kaká and Emérson, both who contracted slight injuries after the last match against Ghana. They are already training with the other players, but the team’s medic hasn’t confirmed their availability. Both are from the main lineup though and are likely to start in the match if they’re fit.

  • Sourav

add another indian to the 11 out of 10 brazilians. i will absolutely hate to see Adriano start again. Either Robinho or Juninho please. Minor irritant after Adriano is Roberto Carlos. The only place his foot should be is in his mouth. Admittedly he was one of the best players (if not the best) for Brazil in the last world cup in my assessment, but he is well past his best days. Come on Brasil, please do not loose to France again. And learn from Argentina’s negative tactics….it does not pay. Why loose with your best player(s) on the bench?

  • John

This should be a great game (like Germany-Argentina). I too hope Parreira paid close attention to how the Argie coach blew it by changing tactics to try and sit on a 1-0 lead. Brazil needs to play with heart, of course, but don’t change strategies! Let France win the middle and counter counter counter!

John: I think Pekerman was also surprised by having to replace the goalkeeper during the match.. that probably blew a very important replacement he could do, with Messi or a few others.

It’s sure a lesson to be learned.

  • ab initio

I hope the Brasil coach watched the Argentina vs Germany game. Argentina lost because of tactical errors by the coach. Instead of substituting Aimar and Messi in the 60th minute when players like Crespo were very tired he botched it trying to play defense. Germany regained the initiative and the ball control and it was only a matter of time to equalize.

Unless Brasil use their bench wisely and play strong collective defense as their defense is weak they will create many open spaces for fast players like Ribery and Henry.

Also Brasil front line has to play as a team not just selfish individuals. The extra pass to the open striker in front of the box that they did not do in the game against Ghana will be fatal against France.

France has the psychological edge due their prior victory over Brasil and excellent game against Spain. France challenged the ball handler and tackled early gaining possession many times and breaking down the Spainsh passing game. Brasil in all their games did not challenge ball handlers early and created much space. This will be punished by Zidane and his excellent passes.

For Brasil to win it has to control the ball and make the extra pass and most importantly it has to play solid defense which means older players like Cafu and Roberto Carlos cannot go front all the time as they lack the speed and stamina to get back on the counter-attack where Ribery and Henry can beat them easily with their speed.

  • Bored to death

I dont know which team i hate more, France with their arrogance or Brazil with their arrogance. The Brazilians go into every match waiting for the opposing team to let them score goals. It is just as well that they havent met any quality opposition on their way because the way they played against Ghana they would have lost by 5 or 6 goals if Ghana had had 1 usable striker. God help Brasil when they do and as a matter of fact I will celebrate. It is a real shame that the by far best team is out of the WC and by that I mean the Albicelestes and their beautiful passing game. I am afraid that the Brasil team will have to train hard to get their individualists to work together as well as the Argentininans do and they will never reach their level in defensive play.
    Go Portugal

Bored: and what exactly is the source of that arrogance? How have you testified it? Is it from some specific interview?

Really, in all honesty, I see nothing but humbleness from both Brazilian and French players. For players that are good enough to be in their national team, they know better than being arrogant pricks — you’ll be hard pressed to find guys like that. Right now I can remember just a few of them, like Cristiano Ronaldo and Eric Cantona, in my opinion.

My point is that many times press and supporters will paint a grim mask of the players from each team, but usually the reality’s quite different.

  • Brasil Hexacampeao

I just really hope that Parreira wakes up and sees how BADLY Adriano is playing. He is so slow and has very little talent. I think he should give Fred a chance. The reason I say that is because the team would gain much more speed. Ronaldinho Gaucho, for example, is playing far from his best football but this is not entirely his fault. He´s a terrific player. So why does he play “so much better” in Barcelona? And the answer is: He has FAST players to play with him. He can launch the ball to Eto for example and he will run and get it. With Adriano, Ronaldinho needs to send the ball straight to his feet (slowing Brazil´s counter-attack) because Adriano CANT RUN!

I like Parreira´s strategy to put Robinho on the 2nd half using his speed to fire up the game. He´s a very important weapon for Brazil with his extreme talent and speed, but this weapon is even more effective when the other team is alreay tired and can´t keep up with him as much.

Roberto Carlos is another one that was great in 2002 but has not done anything to help Brazil this WC. Cafu is not even near his best days either…. I think that Parreira needs to see Cicinho´s work and give him a chance too.

Anyhow, I´ll be cheering tomorrow with all my heart and I hope the HEXACAMPEONATO is coming our way!

    VIVA BRAZIL!

  • not bored to death

bored, you obviously don’t know your soccer. Brasil will beat France and will win the world cup. Too many people have been bashing teams on easy routes and not playing up to pare. Every game at the WC is intense, competitive, and stressful no matter the match. Its about experience and the veterans of Brasil will lead their team to victory. If you can win and keep winning your right on track. Brasil’s depth is 10 times that of any other team. Thats why they all play overseas in various european leagues. Come to grips with the fact that your an Idiot. Do yourself a favor and order the dtv soccer package so you can start talking in four years.

  • mcthingy2

Parreira’s an idiot if he plays Adriano. France have an aging backline who, apart from Sangol, lack pace. Robinho would cause havoc against Gallas and Thuram.

Brazil will get beaten if they play all of the following: Adriano, Roberto Carlos, Emerson, Cafu.

  • Rafael

Bored to death, Argentines is the arrogants ones, always saying things understimating their opponents and Brazil.

Watching Argentina previous results, games in this WC, was not that hard to belive they wouldn´t go so far, only if their opponents could be worse.

Beautyful game only works well against weaker teams, it worked well to Argentina only against Servia e MOntenegro.
    So did Brazil against Japan.

The things you say about France and BRazil only proves your ignorance about the teams, players, coaches and football.

  • Brasil Hexacampeao

Mcthingy2, AMEM! I agree 200% with what you said!

  • Haarf

I agree with that. I didn’t see any arrogance from both teams. Just another cliché from a frustrated ignorant…

May the best win, that’s all.

  • Bulgatti

Brazil, please go after the World Cup, Mexico is with you. Mexico never supported Argentina for their stupid arrogant pride and damned superiority mentality. Mexico always admired Brazil for their art of soccer and humble players. Go Brazil, go… Don’t listen to the Argentinians saying that they could have beaten Brazil in the final. Only in their dreams they could.

  • Ninoska

Bored to death, I see no arrogance at all on either team. You are probably just angry because your team lost (get over it, many more loses will come). What do you base your comment on? Is it because Brasil takes their wins and losses like men and not like whinny crying babies? Do you want them to display their frustrations and dissapointment like the Artentinians do? The Brasilero team takes them as they come, win or lose, the Argentinian team should learn from them. Look at Cafu, he’s always smiling even when he gets a penalty. Face it, Brasil is futbol, and futbol is Brasil. BRASIL I LOVE YOU!!!!

  • Tulio

Here is some food for thought…The 2006 Brazilian team is not the team that in the 70’s rocked the world with players like Rivelino, Gerson, Pelé and Jairzinho. Have you guys ever had the opportunity to watch the Brazilian 70’s team playing? Take your time to do so, and find out about soccer magic times!

Right now there is a lot of media propaganda, making some players look like soccer gods…Because I lived in Brazil before, I know how people in that country expect their team to play…soccer in Brazil is like a fever…it’s in the blood, just like samba…and let’s not forget that Brazil is 5 times champion of the world. So, despite Brazil so far has not performed as the world have been expeting…well they have Ronaldo and other guys able to decide a game, and that makes a difference…whether they are playing well or not.

My bet for tomorrow, with all respect for the French team…Brazil!

  • Suzie Q

Brazil of the 70’s and the Los Angeles Lakers of the 80’s: MAGIC

  • Keshab

Ze’, I foolowed your directions and came here to see how much hatred did Brazil saw in this blog from Argentines. And the fact: negligible. I used to be Argentina and Brazil fan, but from now on, I won’t be a Brazil fan. I lost my desire for this team seeing how Brazilians can’t accept Argentina playing good. From today, I damn care about Brazil football. And looking at the blogs and number of comments, I can honestly say that there indeed are a heck lot of Argentine supporters than Brazilian supporters worldwide. So, get it: my curse is for your team tomorrow! Brazil will lose against France. And I will be enjoying and seeing this blog back.

    Good luck.

Keshab: the internet has been informed of your decision. Thanks for the heads up.

However, giving that we don’t actually insult Argentina on our articles (contrary to some other blog), we have managed to keep the ammount of trolls to a minimum until now, although they do exist. I hope you’ve read some post by wamdiego10, among other “supporters”.

It’s funny that at the same time you say we’re the ones who can’t accept Argentina playing good, and you want to support the team with the highest number of comments on a given blog, but hey… whatever floats your boat.

  • matt

    Ok 2 things…
1-All Brazil fans that r not Brazillian/ have never lived there are the biggest banwagoners of all time…

and 2-Vive le France (go underdogs)

  • Brasil Hexacampeao

Keshab, just FYI, if Brazil had lost today and been disqualified showing a pityful display of lack of talent and sportsmanship than you would have seen this brazilian blog FULL of Argentine scum making fun and humiliating the Brazilian fans (the only thing is that the situation is switched). However, I do agree with Ze when he says that at least in our articles here you WILL NEVER find us personally attacking another team or country. In the other hand, I have personally seen this happening on your Argentine blog.
So, good luck cheering for France tomorrow and don´t be too upset when Brazil wins.

    So long!

    PS: And Matt, DREAM ON!

  • Tristan

I never thought Great team like Arg entina can have an IDIOT coach! Hope Parreira learn a lot from the tragedy of Argentina. Whew! And Pekerman kill the chance of young-vigorous Messi by not fielding him. I hope Parreira will give Robinho the chance to be on the spotlight so the world can see who’s the best among the youngster today. With Adriano, the team look as a old car pulled from the junkyard. Brazil needs fluids and stylish individuals that can give the true meaning of World Cup! THE BEAUTIFUL GAME AND THE BRAZILIAN ATTACK!!!
    VENGEANCE!!!
I have watch that game too early in the morning in our Government TV Station, and it breaks my heart!!! Hope this time as i will watch Brazil-France tomorrow @ the Ateneo, Brazil can have the revenge every fanatics want it all.

About the finals, I see no rematch between Germany-Brazil this time. If the germans won against the Argentina due to the idiotic act of Pekerman, I guess a semi-finals with Italy will bring heartache to all Germans! And bottles of beer will be flying all over germans.
    As for now… GO BRAZIL………
PLAY THE BEAUTIFUL GAME! PLAYERS DANCING SAMBA IN THE PITCH!

  • bobby

Well, the Brazilians are not what they used to be, it is obvious they have some individual talents, but their defense could be penetrated easily by any team especially if the team is not intimidated by their name and have beat them previously when they were in their peak performance.
I think Brazil will struggle but they will loose at the end.
and not board to death: this is not American football.

  • Tristan

Bored to death? Who? That idiot should stop making blog nor surfing the net! its more boring than watching the most beautiful game on earth!

  • Josimars

God article “ab initio” you hit the nail on the head. I don’t know what Pekerman was thinking when he replaced Riquelme. He was tired yes but so was Ballack but klinsman did not replace him and you saw how the Germans responded even with the tired Ballack. Riquelme is the leader of the team and Argentina needed him especially during the overtime.

I’ve supported Brazil my whole life (as has my entire family) but seeing that I’m not Brazilian and have never lived there, I suppose I must be one of those ‘bandwagon’ jumpers that the charming ‘Matt’ refers to…

    Whatever.

With that out of the way, of course people are sceptical about the twin towers. Could not agree more with the poster who noted that Adriano all but needs the feeder to score to goal for him. He can barely manage to get his big body onto the end of a ball that is already goal-bound. He’s a clod. He’s so awkward that he’s unbearable to watch and makes Ronaldo look positively lithe.

    Depressing.

If France is playing half-way decently they will shut down Adriano in a heart-beat, while their own Ribery will be sprinting around… It maddens me that Dinho is being sacrificed in order to provide good passes for Adriano to squander. It makes no sense.

I wish Parreira wasn’t so adverse to Robinho. Brazil could use the speed and the agility against France’s defense.. Get Gilberto Silva in there pronto, and Juhninho. If France’s bout against Spain wasn’t just a swan-song, then be ready for a real game (at last) and be ready to put your best men forward, because your reputation alone won’t win you this.

We’ve already seen today where leaving your best talent on the bench will get you…Please bring the game Brazil.

  • Keshab

Brasil Hexacampeao: France is not my team. Neither I am Argentine nor Brazilian. I loved both teams equally. But my heart broke when lot of Brazil fans are laughing at Argentina crying, and they are not being ready to accept that Argentina played a good football. I might have been angry with Argentines if Brazil had lost first and Argentines had written such for Brazil’s loss. But the fact is: I saw Brazilian fans laughing at Argentine loss and ignoring the fact that they played good football.

Yeah, I am not a French supporter, but seeing such Bullish about Argentina by Brazil fans made me eager to see the same for Brazil fans if they lose. I know, one loss won’t make any difference to the future of Brazilian football, nor the Argentine loss today will make their future football worse. Although I won’t have a problem with Brazil win, my heart wants to see Argentina fans laughing at Brazil fans as well. And that will make things cancel out for me, and I will again be able to cheer both the Argentine and Brazilian football with passion in the future.

That’s all I have to say.

  • Tascien

I am for France, but all I can say is…

I need to see another good match like Guadalajara in Mexico 86 or Paris in France 98.

    Hope it’s a great and enjoyable match…

    T.

  • Alrod

Brazil will bring it on tomorrow. Expect to see Junhino and Ronaldinho creating magic. Robiho will create havoc for the French and Ronaldo will be Ronaldo–GOALS!!!

Argentina was not a good team to begin with. They depende too much on Riquelme and Messi. Brazil depend on no one. Whoever is in the game will deliver the goods. Period! The have so far, why would it be different tomorrow?

Thank god for Parriera and his intelligent approach!

Do any of you imagine the game between Brazil vs Portugal, Scolari vs Parriera? Deco vs Ronaldinho? I am rooting for Portugal u should too!!!

  • Tristan

    Mr. Alrod,
It could be possible and seems exciting to watch! Portugal VS Brazil semi-finals. brazilian vs brazilian. I guess portugal will win against england. England journey to Neverland will be put on stop by the Portuguese.

It could be a perfect scenery too, Figo vs Ronaldo in the semis. Cristiano Ronaldo vs Ronaldo.

  • Tascien

    RONALDO RONALDO

  • Miguelinho

Spain didn’t respect its elders. With equal parts confidence and respect for France, Brazil should be OK.

There will be many players looking to make a point – and if Adriano plays, I hope he won’t be greedy like last time.

  • AAAA

Why are you brazilians such suckers??? why do you go to other teams blog and make fun of them? You asshole, and your slut mothers. stay here and dont go around and spread shit. you fat asses. Fuck you all bitches

  • Miguelinho

    Zi there. Dan(e) that.

No more French goals from corners, please. Lucio better be on his A-game!

  • spaghetti6

Brazil are strong , no doubt but watch out for that man Zidane. One moment of magic from him and its all over for Brazil.

  • JP

Well, I’m over here in the Brazilian blog because no less than 100 of you had the good taste to come over and insult Argentina today…(I never would have guessed you cared so much). I’ll just say this: If you clowns lose in regular time, you actually will have been eliminated from this World Cup EARLIER than Argentina. So…Enjoy as France breaks your ass for the 3rd consecutive time in World Cup play. You guys must love the feeling…

See you in Copa America…Don’t worry too much that we beat you for the Sub20 World Title and have maybe 10x the number of under 23 TOP LEVEL players…You already know Tevez, Messi and Mascherano, but over the next 10-15 years you’ll get to know all the rest as Brazil tries to salvage a creaky system that today relies on the likes of Emerson, Cafu, Roberto Carlos & Ronaldo.

You guys really are the Pamela Anderson of world soccer: Over-hyped, over-marketed, appealing to the brainless.

  • Sanjay

Sourav, Ze, Euler, and other members with genuinely insightful posts on this fantastic message board:

Just heard Tommy Smyth – ESPN’s Irish football commentator – say that France would win tomorrow. He was being interviewed by Charlie Rose (an interviewer on public television here in the US)

And now, I log onto this web-site only to see that Pele has picked France too.

Adding to my discomfort is a dream (nightmare) I had yesterday that France won. This has put me in a terrible mood. I am having trouble falling asleep tonight.

Although I am from India I have been a huge fan of Brazil since 1982. Many of my close friends are Brazilian too. Two of my worst world cup memories are Brazil loosing to France in 1986 and in 1998.

I hope that the players put aside their rivalries (young clique vs. old clique, etc.) and that they play as a team. France (and Germany too) despite their slightly inferior individual talent compared to a Brazil or an Argentina are able to effectively function as a unit. (France 98 is a perfecdt example).

Since Parreira got Romario and Bebeto to work together in 1994 I hope he can impose the same discipline so we don’t have situations like Adriano not passing to an open R9 or Cafu not passing to an open R10 as in the Ghana match.

May Brazil win but I am getting more pessimistic. Can someone cheer me up, please?

  • http://brazil.worldcupblog.org/ Euler

Keshab, you just can’t know what’s going on. I hope you move on to Argentina or Brazil for at least 10 years and then I’ll consider your opinion over this matter.

Silly man! You just can’t possibly know what we Brazilians had to endure from our neighbors… you just don’t have a clue! Believe you me!!!!!!!!

  • http://brazil.worldcupblog.org/ Euler

To Sanjay: many of my friends dreamed of Brazil losing to Ghana. We won. Sleep well tonight!

  • http://datlee17.tk le dinh dat

hi i think german won is not worth, maybe argentina could with 2-1 by the penalty but refree didnot .a bad refree
and now i want brasil will won in fron of the france.

  • David

I watched the Brazil/Ghana match very critically and concluded that inspite of the loss, Ghana played better footbal. Brazil took advantage of Ghana’s overall team inexperience, poor execution of the off side tactics and wasted scoring chances. The outcome might have been different if Essien played. Perhabs he might have been able to prevent the catastrophic breakdown in defence that led to the Brazil goals. Also he might have been able to feed the stikers with balls to take advantage of the wide gaps created by the Brazillian defenders. Too bad that the yellow card epidemic should ruin the flavor of games so much. Referees rule, fans suffer.

Brazil will be facing France who will present them with a lot more challenge on offense. Henry can create opportunities and can score goals. France is tight in team defense and has great team speed. Unless Brazil shows something dramatically different than their last performance, I see them going home. I love to watch Brazil but I see signs of aging, slower steps and fading glory. What are we going to see today? A revamped, recharged fighting Brazil or tied old legs gasping for air and praying for the last blast of the referee’s whistle to end the carnage. Prediction…My heart says Brazil and my head says France. I guess I win either way.

  • Tristan

Tonight, as the brazilian team play ,i see a diff. approach and i will be jumping w/ joy. I see the vengeance tonight! A HAT-TRICK from RONALDO! YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

  • Hiren

Cringe inducing is about the only way to describe how any article about the Brazilian team strategy or their toilet manners includes a mention of this ‘Golden Quartet’ nonsense. An average at best central defense, along with a bunch of highly overrated wingers don’t make for a World Cup winning team. And it doesn’t stop there. Unfortunately for Brazil, it’s not all good (And this is putting it mildly) if you look beyond Ronaldinho and Kaka.

I can’t believe Brazil are favourites for this one, I really can’t. France with their rock solid defense and midfield (THE BEST IN THE TOURNAMENT. There, I said it! Because it’s as much about breaking plays in the midfield as it is about setting up goals) are clear favourites in my book. Yes the finishing needs to be sorted out a bit, but with THAT defense and midfield, all you need is to get it right once and you’re through. Then a second just to seal it and a third to show them the
‘98 final was no fluke, and then a fourth just to add insult to injury. *

    * I don’t mean to sound too demanding, but perhaps a fifth? As punishment to Ronaldo for the ummm moon hair we had to bile our way through in the 2002 final.

Incase you haven’t already realised, GO FRANCE!!

  • lawrence

you are all idiot who say adriano is rubbish he likes to be the centre forward end of

he has to play off ronaldo which he is shite at

same goes with ronaldinho he is playing out of position and this is affecting his game as well

adriano likes to be the centre forward so he can muscle up the defenders and push em about which is his main strength parreira is not making the best use of his star players at all

if adriano was the centre forward there to hold up the ball he could get ronaldinho in to their attacks a hell of alot more and many more players who like to push from midfield.

adriano also likes to run at defenders from half way but he cant for brasil but he can for inter parreira is wasting his players main talents and using them out of position

adriaon has still scored 2 goals and goals keep u in teams like henry for france

adriano should stay in the starting line-up why his international record speaks for itself

24 goals 34 games u dont take out a striker like that from ur starting line-up

  • BRA—zil

so u brazilians..showed again..dat u all r just made of shit..by going to da argentina blog and putting sum ugly comments..allright argentina lost..but dont forget da way they played..and they were playing germany..ok not ghana..and all u overconfident brazillians..ur team is not gonna win da world cup..ok so f*** off and do ur big ass stupid dance u people call samba..

    BRASIL will win this game

adriano will score and so will ronaldo im predicting

    2-1

Hiren, its very rich for you to make such comments. A comment so far from the truth and greater than 2 standard deviations from the mean is quite simply ABNORMAL ( a euphemism).

In Brazil, the world can witness the beautiful freeflowing game at its best. Their passing, their relentless attack, their skills are simply of the highest order.

It is not a fluke that they have such a huge worldwide following. Your ridiculous comments about their supposed frailties merely reflects on your inferiority complex and self-oppression.

Yes, Brazil may lose because they don’t try to defend a winning margin, or because the referee may cheat, but certainly not the reasons you mentioned.

Rest in peace, and with non-sensical comments like yours, you should continue focussing on your cricket and cricket ALONE

  • EagleEye

I’m really surprised by all this 98 REVENGE atmosphere… But that 98 final was really funny, since the french left the field REALLY BELIEVING their played better, had a better team than ours. WHAT IS A TOTAL ABSURD.

1-In 98, we lost only to OURSELVES. This was CLEAR as water. If we played against ZIMBABWE or HONDURAS that day, we would lose 3-0.

2-Now, let’s remember here: almost the same FRENCH team didn’t go through the first round in 2002 and now (with an even WORSE team) had troubles with TOGO and tied KOREA and SWITZERLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!! If they were BRAZILIANS, I would advise them no to go home, for the press and the fans WOULD TRASH THEM. FRANCE is a BAD team and all this ENVY and BLIND opposition to BRAZIL makes they think they really have a chance. COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3-It’s AMAZING how people are so BIASED in their comments!!! They say WONDERFUL things about the french team, and i wonder HOW THEY CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s impossible!!! Brazilian players wouldn’t be able to sleep anymore with such a RIDICULOUS campaign!! Hard time with TOGO and KOREA!!!! GIMME A BREAK!!!!!!!!!!

My fellow brazilians, don’t worry: we’ll have a GREAT game today. PRACTICE is over. I’m sure they will play their best.
