Sad day… Tele will be missed

Great Man This great coach died today from abdominal infection at the age of 74. He was in the hospital since March 25th and his condition altered many times, but at the end Tele, who was diabetic, couldn’t respond to the treatment.

At the 50’s he was a very well known player of Fluminense Football Club. At that time the fans used to call him “Fio de Esperança” (string of hope). ‘String’ because he was very slim and ‘Hope’ because he was famous for deciding many matches in its final moments. (source pt)

After that he coached the Fluminense club, one of the most traditional teams from Brazil. Their stadium is very near my building and my father used to see him in restaurants of our neighborhood with his friends. He was a simple and accessible man and later on he became not only worldly successful, but a very respected professional and an admirable family man.

He was the Brazilian coach for the Seleção in the years of 1982 and 1986, with great players like Zico, Falcão and Sócrates. He reached the top of his career in the years of 1992 and 1993 with the club São Paulo, when he got the Intercontinental Cup twice in a row.

Players like Raí and Rogerio Ceni, for an example, always refer to him as a great father figure. Zico said “If there is a coach that deserved to win a World Cup, Tele was the one”. He could be very hard on the players, even the super stars, but outside the pitch he treated everyone very well, even giving valuable career advices for his players. To Rogerio he showed how to shoot free kicks, one of the goalkeeper’s specialties.

Parreira already said that the World Cup will be a perfect occasion to pay homage to Tele Santana. “He was an advocate of the beautiful football, well played, always in pursue of attack. It’s a sad day to Brazilian football”, he said.

I believe that his legacy is great, not only in the green field, but mainly in the hearts of his many friends and family members, as his sister Maria Jose said earlier: “He is gone only in body, because his spirit will be always with us”.

You’re more than welcomed. I thank you. So many players were fans and also family to him… it’s a real blow to our hearts. Thanks again Trent!

Condolences to Brazil. Its always difficult to lose a positive force like that, particularly one with such a history. His influence on the sport and philosophy of the game live on through this team and through football all over Brazil.

I was fortunate to be in the Estadio Sarria when Brasil played Italy in Espana ‘82. Even though BRA only needed a draw against the Italians their natural instinct was to attack and go for the winner.

Yes Italy advanced with a 3-2 result an advanced but I cannot say BRA lost. Attacking soccer was the winner that day and I thank Tele Santana for his contribution to that phiosophy of play.
