Samba and Rock at Sugar Loaf

June 10th, 2006 | By: Euler Costa | 10 Comments »

I'll be performing here! This year the Brahma beer will provide a big screen for fans to watch the Brazilian games over the Urca hill, where the Sugar Loaf is. What band did they called to perform after the games? MY BAND!!! The bad part of it is that I will not be around to comment live or to post anything until the day after the games. The best part is that my post will be about the big party’s point of view. I will be at a wondeful site with a wonderful crowd and on the stage. My camera will be on the stage to bring you all the Brazilian football fever at first hand.

Of course there will be many other big screens across Rio de Janeiro. If you are in town you can also look for other bars and theaters, even on the beach. I didn’t find any official list but the one I found specifies gatherings at ‘Circo Voador’, ‘Lord Jim Pub’, ‘Devassa Bar (Barra/Leblon), ‘Bar do Juarez’, ‘Hard Rock Café’, ‘Clipper’ and ‘Teatro Rival’. But there is no view like the one you get at the Sugar Loaf, so get your flags ready and go enjoy an amazing afternoon with me and my rock with samba band. If you were born or lives in Rio, bring a document and 1 kilo of food and you will pay only half the ticket!

My band is called ‘Mané Sagaz’ and we will be performing our own material plus some football traditional songs. My friend and blogger for Croatia, Soze, found our You Tube video from the day we performed in the ‘Domingão do Faustão’ TV show reaching 30 million viewers on a Sunday afternoon, and he asked me what does ‘Mané Sagaz’ means.

With Nelson Sargento‘Mané’ means the ordinary sucker, a naive fool that people usually walk over. ‘Sagaz’ means clever, fast witted, smart and streetwise.

Mané Sagaz is an expression we created to describe the everyday (common) man that is regularly fooled by corrupt politicians and wild capitalist corporations, but still manages to go on living a meaningful life, dribbling the difficulties that the lack of money can bring.

You all know Brazil is a struggling country with struggling people when it comes to economy, right? So we are the clever idiots, the stupid streetwise, the honest workers that are forced to buy pirate CDs because of its ludicrous price. I hope you guys can get the feel of the meaning. It’s not easy to explain it in Portuguese and it’s a little harder to explain it in English.

Just keep in mind that it is not only about CD prices. The senators are always voting raises for their own salaries while we must continue living without this right. Even with their maharajah income they still are corrupt. Our taxes are among the highest in the world, but public health and education are terrible.

One must be very ‘sagaz’ to keep smiling, to keep partying and to keep living an honest life. Our number one criminals are running the country, unfortunately, and they won’t dare to give the people better education otherwise they won’t get elected again. Only a miracle will fix our system. And sometimes football is the only thing that makes us smile so much.

Well, wish me luck! I’ll be inviting someone to help me write for this beloved blog during the World Cup, since I’ll be absent at the Brazil game days. Don’t forget to check my post the day after!!! I’ll have pictures and videos!

Thanks Trent and Ninj!!!

I’m sure it will be a lot of fun! Good luck to USA and Ecuador too, man!

Lord Jim is really cool! I bet it will be packed there during the English and Brazilian games. It’s a nice place to practice my English.

You know Bibo??? Ha!!! He is completely crazy! I was informed that we wouldn’t be allowed to set a vip list, unfortunately. There is no ticket to the event, only the cablecar must be paid. Half, if you prove to be from Rio and bring 1 kilo of food. Bibo probably told you that already, right?

Nice of you to participate here, Gustavo! I’ll be with Bibo tomorrow and I’ll tell you sent hugs!

Hey Soze! I’ll post my picture with Fernandinha soon. She is so beautiful… so nice…

Thanks, man! For now Brahma is the best (don’t let Erdinger read this) for sure. I never leave home without a pack of Aspirines anyway.

June 13 we will be glued on a screen to get the final answer… I can’t wait! The press here is driving everyone crazy!

Now Lula (our President) asked if Ronaldo was fat. Ronaldo asked if the rumors about the president’s alcohol problem was true also… what a mess!!! We need to start soooonnn!!!
