The Argentinean Affair
Man, we have some angry neighbours here in South America. Our rivals are that angry because they think they belong in Europe. They feel prejudice against themselves! They hate to be South Americans. Brazilians are the only South Americans that don’t speak spanish, but we don’t feel like outsiders here… we love to be South Americans.
Some day Argentineans will wake up and see who they really are and they will have to deal with it. The Peso is not like a Dollar anymore. And when they wake up, they will find out how interesting South America is. And that will be the best day in all South American history. Brazil and Argentina are rivals, but I’ve never experienced such hate against us since this blog got real busy. They hate us so much that they don’t admit Brazil is their main rivals. They say that the English are the ones (Malvinas/Falklands). Just not true. I’ve never seen such hate against the English.
You can read everywhere that Brazil has a brilliant game, including legend’s Franz Beckenbauer opinion. But our South American neighbours are so blind in their hate that they are able to say that Brazil is paying to win.
Well, to every Argentinean that believes in this bribe affair, my final answer is this:
I understand that you love the idea of Brazil paying to win games. I only don’t understand why England, Spain and Italy, countries that are 1000% richer than Brazil can’t be champions in your conspiracy theory. The United States supremacy would never end! Imagine that!!! I hope to see some hard evidence about these accusations. If you can point some news site that have some saying about this issue, just let us know. Argentinean press do not count, of course.
Why Argentina got a hard group and Brazil haven’t? My honest opinion? Argentina is paying cosmic karma because of 1978’s results. You can read all about this issue in this address:
http://www.answers.com/topic/football-world-cup-1978
That would cover the issue, but we can add Maradona’s hand goal (heretically called by himself “Hand of God”) to the list. Like God would have to get that low to achieve anything.
I won’t be addressing on this issue in the future because it is offensive to football lovers, Brazilians, Argentineans and fans all over the world.
The game is on the green field so… let the best team win!

Euler, you make generalizations and use old fashioned stereotypes in this article. Human beings have the tendency to talk a lot of b.s., but at the end of the day, actions speak louder than words. I am an Argentine, and I find it difficult to argue against 5 World Cup wins. I also believe that Brazil will always be our biggest rival. I am proud of being South American. I am also European by heritage. The Argentine national identity is defined greatly by our European ancestors.
Argentines are passionate about football. Don’t confuse passion with hate. And don’t let stereotypes and grand generalizations fog up your view of the Brazil-Argentina rivalry.

Not every Argentinean hate Brazil, but some really do. Just read some comments here and you’ll realize that.
The only problem with this European heritage is when we see some Argentinean guys acting like they are superior than the rest of South Americans. Maybe you never felt like that, but you should come to Brazil and meet some of your countryboys. You should hear them saying how England is their true rivals.
Brazilians have heritages too. Portuguese, and Spanish mainly. Italian and German are also very strong. But above it all we love to be Brazilians.
It’s awsome that you wrote this comment. Maybe it will help each other to understand better what kind of relation Brazilians and Argentineans should look for.

Wow your pretty stereotypical my friend Euler. Who wants to be European. We are Argentinian we have the Sangre Azul lol. Why would we want to be anything else. We our proud of ourselves because of our achievements. Our club teams win everything. I think two of our clubs our leading the world in most cups. Our national team has more copa americas than you by I believe double digits. If it wasnt for the 3 World Cups really what would Brazil have over Argentina. Tennis - NO, Rugby - NO, Basketball - NO ,And technically Uruguay has 5 world cups too dont mean there better than us. Do Uruguayans wanna be european too since there like Argentinians?
And what you call hate is just speculation, opinions, and a RIVALRY my friend. O and too most english fans Argentina is there biggest Rival.

I am a Brasil supporter, but your blog really deviated from the topic of football, by getting economics & finance, and other non-related subjects. It is interesting to analyze where your experience & background has taken you to theorise on the Brazil/Argentina rivalry.
I think myself that it is good and healthy that other South American nations continue having rivalries between themselves as long as it is kept respectful because such rivalries only improve the quality developed in the South America. Euler, when I was younger, I did have preconceived notions of people until as the years went by and maturity set in I was not so quick on the draw to feel what a person was until I walk their shoes. You have to understand that it gets frustrating for a nation as rich as Argentina not to win as many as Brazil when it has produce some of world’s best footballers. People are the same wherever you go, there are good and bad! You cannot discount Argentina as world powerhouse, they haven’t had the fortunes its big neighbor has had in the world stage. This World Cup we are coming to in June in truth has no favorites…and I quote Ronaldinho on that! Good Luck Brazil or Argentina!!!!!

Byron, our blog is about the World Cup but we have to consider any issue that can generate feelings here. Rivalry is fine, but when you are a Brazilian you can feel prejudice from some guys. But I think you didn’t walk our shoes yet. When I was younger I didn’t understand the reasons, but now I know.
About Argentina’s powerhouse, who can deny that? Only a blind person could will not see their super players. Did you know that in the amazing Brazilian national championship the guy that was elected as the BEST player was Carlos Tevez from Argentina? We love to see good football! Tevez have it an we can see it.
About favouritism, Brazil is considered the main team in betting sites and you can read the expert’s opinions all around. But as I said before, favouritism doesn’t win a game. Everything is possible in football and any team can win.

Euler, i think that language acts as a barrier, because i`m the one who thinks that Brazilians hate us…
When Quilmes went to Sao Pablo, you treated our professionals as pigs, and do the thing you do with desabatto…. and that i dont understand because the problem of recism is in Brazil… not here…
when Brazilian teams come here they don`t have such problems, and `the security of our stadium never did the stuff that happened in Sao Pablo with River/Quilmes fans (security shut down cameras and violented argentines (one friend of mine was there).
When Junior come to Boca, as Paulo Silva in San Lorenzo they were treated well, and none of them recieved the criticism that Tevez got when he arrived Brazil.

Tevez is superman here now. Has been selected our national’s championship best player. We don’t hate anybody if they don’t come to our face and treat us with disrespect. That’s a barrier bigger than language, don’t you agree?

Tevez had to make his mark by beating the sh1t out of one of his own players before he got respect which than allowed him to take over! Oh and do you think they enjoyed naming an argentinian best player ; absolutely not but they had no choice haha

Romario scored more goals than him at the age of 39. Get your homework done before saying bs like that. Teves deserved it. Search for conspiracy in this.

you are wayyyyyyyyy off in your line of thought man.
Argentinians don’t hate Brazilians, we don’t even hate the English. These are common misconceptions drawed by uninformed individuals who believe a nation is defined by what happens in correlation to specific events like a futbol match or a war.
The Argentinians are weird people, we can excel at almost everything but don’t have the will to succeed at anything. Of course I’m generalizing BIG TIME in these remarks, but i’m just trying to make a point. We falsely believe we are not the best at this or that, we truly believe we are better than the best. Funny stuff right? well, that’s what we believe. And that’s why you can sometimes read between the lines a feeling that in this world Argentines are “cheated” out of what we believe we deserved : glory.
We thought we were destined to be a world economic power, our economy sucks.
We thought we could beat the English and recover our Islands, so we went to war with a world power, we lost.
We thought the last 3 World Cups were in the bag, well, NOT.
And that’s why we Argentinians only hate ourselves. We just don’t deliver what we expect from ourselves.
Now if you think that something that brings us such satisfaction as beating Brazil at the only thing we can beat them, and we get pretty worked up during the match, means we HATE Brazilians, that’s an exaggeration. We just hate that we can’t beat them every time.

Greatest text about Argentineans until now!!! Thank you Gaston Cufre!!! You achieved what you deserve in your comment: glory.

Gaston: Argentina beat the US in Basketball for Christ’s sake!!! There’s like 12 people in Argentina that play basketball. Pretty much says it all…
Brazil has a population the size of the US. I think they surf OK, right? I mean what, apart from being the second best football country in the world, does Brazil do athletically? Brazil is a large, beautiful country with not so much culture - as a result, you could say that it aspires to be like the U.S. (to use euler’s simplistic corollary), but heavier on the flip-flops, manioc root and ‘cool’ attitude.
(In seriousness, of course it’s silly to ‘hate’ in generalizations (or at all for that matter), but good provoking banter is nice before a world cup.

What does we do athletically?
Summer Olympics Position by Year:
2004 – Athens: Brazil 16th / Argentina 38th
2002 – Sydney: Brazil 52nd / Argentina 57th
1996 – Atlanta: Brazil 25th / Argentina 54th
1992 – Barcelona: Brazil 25th / Argentina 64th
1988 – Seoul: Brazil 24th / Argentina 35th
Brazilians do that without private sponsors, training in bad shoes and having to pay, in most cases, the flight ticket from their own pocket.
And don’t tell me about culture. Our nation is formed from lots of cultural backgrounds, all of witch we are proud of. We don’t aspire to be anything but Brazilians.
Provoking is one thing, but nonsense is foul play. I rather keep it fair.

What gaston cufre says has truth in it…check this link out on how argentina are hindered by their past greatness…

Thanks for the links Hans! The article about our rivalry is great.
I know a lot of friends thay have only good experiences with Argentineans.
I also know an Argentinean girl that is absolutely sweet and she is constantly moving from there to here all the time. She speaks portuguese very well, but a very cute accent.
My blood only boils when I read some guy’s conspiracy theories. Or when a drunk Argentinean starts to yell to my face that they are superior than us and call us “macaquitos” (little monkeys).
I’ve been in Buenos Aires and I had some wine in a very cold evening. Absolutely great memories. We were very well recieved there too.

My pleasure. You said it yourself, drunk fans yelling crap(theirs idiots in every group of the world). The majority of argentinians i am sure enjoy watching Brazil play the flowing football. The rivalry is strictly within sports. Everyone says my team is better than yours but believe me argentina are in awe of the football brazilians play.
To be named as Brazils greatest South American rival is an honour itself and all argentinians want to prove is that they can once again reach the heights that Diego Maradona touched.

you folks from argentina should speak less and play more. you play decent football sometimes but your arrogance is always on the way,i mean, on your way. it nauseates not only brazilians but other people too. maybe when you get this reality bite you’ll have the spotlight for the right reasons, not for playing dirty and violent, not for being bad losers. who are you to talk about civilization after the aggression against the germans, the latest form your list? you act like the native tribe you try to hide from your past. stop delivering speeches against racism in front of the cameras and really act out what your beautiful words say.
