What are you Ghana do…

June 23rd, 2006 | By: Zé Fernando | 30 Comments »

…when they come for you?

Brazil advances to the round of 16 and faces Ghana next tuesday. Parreira says he hasn’t decided the team formation yet. Maybe he just wants it to remain secret so Ghana won’t be able to plan in advance, or maybe he was awestruck with the performance by most of the second squad yesterday and now has to reflect on the changes he’ll do. More on that on the near future.

In the meantime, Ghana is very much ready for Brazil and they aren’t afraid to win - Parreira admits they’ll be a tough opponent. Oddly enough, Ghana was the first team Parreira ever coached: in 1968, straight after getting his degree, Parreira went to Ghana to work as a coach for their national team. He was 25 at the time.

As long as Brazil stays focused, and doesn’t look ahead to meeting Spain in the final 8, they should be OK.

I would still rest Adriano, and continue to play Ronaldo alongside Robinho. Sub Adriano for Ronaldo in the 60+ minute or so.

If CAP insists on starting Emerson and not Juninho, Juninho should come in in the second period.

Cafu for Cicinho, but maybe bring in Cicinho in the second half.

Brazil woke up, and that’s bad news for every other team in the Cup. They’ll beat Ghana 2-0 or 3-0. Without Essien, Brazil will have a field day controlling the midfield. And when Brazil can control the midfield, no one can compete.

I do not think Juninho is Emerson’s replacement. It is Gilberto Silva. How do you fit Juninho is a great question and I think he should start. Ze Roberto for Carlos with the central position of Ze Roberto going to Juninho? I do not thing Perriera will do this as he did not experiment this in the Japan match.
I like Gilberto Silva better than Emerson and may be Juninho for Ze Roberto. Does this weaken the defence?
I believe Robinho is certain to start with Ronaldo. And Ronaldo is wake but not even 80%. He has awesome talent but is still missing his touch and runs. That ball from Robinho should have been such an easy goal if only he did not pull up from his run. But he will only get better with more practice. What a strike the last goal was! He is gaining confidence too. Brazil will need to mark Appaiah and control midfield and be alert in defence against Ghana. Cafu and Carlos are more experienced to defend against highly skilled Ghanians one on one. Still I am afraid they will give up at least 1 goal with a threat of more, but should also get more chances than Ghana to score. Will they be able to capitalize is the winning question. For Ghana, who will mark Ronaldinho with essien out? By the way, it is time R10 contributes a bit more in a practical way. Not just runs and dribbles but something that results in more goals. This is not a criticism but as best player the expectations are higher than from merely good players. Brasil have to control the ball over 60-65% to reduce chances of ghana attack.

ronaldo playing at 95%? lmao anyone of u have a clue what is his 100% or have a clue of what his 100% used to be?

Ronaldo not so long time ago, used to be like robinho and a couple of ronaldinho gaucho stuffs, ronaldo used to create dribles never done b4, and Ronaldinho Gaucho used to copy his movies, but i believe since 98 him is just not more the same, him dont go anymore foward trying to drible just with skill, its much more like force, putting the ball ahead and trying to run more then the defenser, now days him is kind like “old Romario” but with more movements, though romario is inteligent on field then him, who here remember romario of i believe in 87/88 getting the ball from mildfield of “vasco” team and running and dribling all players from flamengo and scoring one of most beatiful goals i have seen, that is why i say “old romario” cuz ronaldo never played good as younger romario, also 94 romario was still great, get a tape of 94 matches and u will see romario every time going on mildfield dribling 1, 2 , 3 players trying to make his way to goal.

so that said, if we compare the ronaldo of today with the ronaldo of 2002 him is playing about 60% of what i believe him can play and him playing about 35-40% of him used to play b4 1998, “our best” ronaldo is from 1994-1997.

about ghana “Brasil have to control the ball over 60-65% to reduce chances of ghana attack.”

i dont think it will be this way, its hard to keep the ball, since they go everytime rushing the player which is with the ball, like i said on others posts, it will be a game with alot goals for both sides if brazil play with the last team and maybe a game with a few goals with the current team, i dont think brazil will be able to hold they players, cuz they go alot skill dribling and making they way to goal, brazil need a offensive tive to create more chances of goal.

From this post, i see that the brazilians know the score to this match . They willl score more goals against Ghana. That is a complete hasty conclusion. Do not in the least underestimate the Ghanaians or u will pay a heavy prize for it. Against Ghana your deffence must be smart and ur midfield very effective in cotrolling the ball. Anything short of this and brazil will be sent home from this tournment. They only reason Ghana has more yellow card is because they referees hasn’t been kind to this team in issuing the yellow cards. yellow to Asamoah was takign a penalty when he shdn’t. Yellow to Essiem was a bad decision. yellow to Appiah was time wasting. Some of these yellow card are just not warranted.

You’re dreaming if you think Ghana will beat Brazil. I totally admire Ghana’s effort and abilities, but they are in a completely different league compared to Brazil. I’m actually going to be cheering for Ghana to upset, but realistically, I see it Brazil 2-0 or 3-0.

Ghana is in no way equally skillful to Brasil - they have the highest fouling record in this cup and their style is completely different from Brasil’s. Ghana is probably equally motivated and I have no doubt they will try to thrash Brasil, but fouls don’t win matches and the Brasil team has enough depth to deal with injuries.

To Abz - you sound like sore loser. I’ll clarify something for you. Brasil doesn’t “think they are too good,” but they KNOW they are damn good.

Abz: do Brazil think theyre too good, or are you afraid of the fact that they MIGHT be good, leading yourself to hate them regardless of what they think?

Historically Brazil gets better as they advance to the next round. Almost all of the players play in Europe not in Brazil, therefore most of the time they do not play together. Also their defence is a little better this time, we all know about their offence.

Somebody please explain this to me…Do players carry their yellow cards to the second round of sweet sixteen? I thought they started the second round with a fresh slate. My question is regards to Essien of Ghana.

David: they don’t carry the yellow cards - they are reset when the team gets past the qualifying round. However, if a player had taken two yellow cards and was already suspended for the next (4th) game, he remains suspended for the first game of the round of 16. Essien is suspended because of that, but other than that all players have a clean card count.

Of course yes. Ghana has the ability and willingness. As one of the only ten teams remaining in the competition why not? If Ghana won’t win this year… then of course Tanzania will win 2010 as the first Afican nation to do so. Go Ghana Go!

important road block !!
the most important is to score 2 early goals in first half to prevent any incident happen such as red card, injury or sudden goal by opponent.

It will be a great game and a great day for African football.

ghana 3
brazil 2

I don’t think many of you know how good Ghana is…….. but I bet you the Brazilian team does though. My only hope is that the “elitist” and the “ONLY the continents of Europe and S. American can win the WC” refereeing stops.

You’re kidding, right? Brazil toyed with Ghana late in the game, CLEARLY not scoring with numerous one-on-one chances against the Ghana goalie. You Ghana fans should respectfully thank the Brazilians for not running up the score to 6-0 or 7-0. They did that to help your team avoid major shame and leave with some dignity.

I predicted a 3-0 Brazil rout. I’m not tooting my own horn, just pointing out that it was a fantasy to believe Ghana could hang with Brazil for a full 90 minutes. Those two teams are just on different planes (as are virtually every other team on the planet vs. Brazil).

Having said all of that, I thought Ghana showed great heart early on. They were winning the battle of the midfield decisively. At one point I counted 8 straight contested balls won by Ghana. That’s impressive hustle and effort. Ghana’s defense was very solid early on.

Now for the bad news… Ghana can’t shoot to save their lives. It’s very frustrating to watch a talented team like Ghana move the ball down the field against a superpower like Brazil, only to see shot after shot sail over the post, around the post, and not even in the same zip code as the post.

If Ghana will work on two things, I think we’ll see them back and better than ever in 4 years: better control on first touches, and shooting accuracy. That’s all they needed to at least make it a good game today instead of what turned into an embarrassing rout.

90th min: the referees have done a fantastic job — of making sure Brazil will win the game and not have to do much of anything.

Brazil is pathetic, game against Ghana was a farce, shame Ghana was not good enough to put it in the net when they had the 3 or 4 opt’s - Brazil sontinues to sail on old luck, shame for soccer and the refs once again showed how bad they and FIFA are/is

Hi guys, this is kinda late but just my analysis of the gana brasil game.Lots and loads of people are blaming the ref for assisting brazil to win and sinking the africans hope.Am from africa and what am seeing are people who are not sincere. If gana had 1 goal then and we count the adriano and ze robs goals as offsides then we would have a contencuous issue at hand. But gana lost there chances to score and the botom line is then brasil won 1-0 if you remove the 2 offside goals.where does that leave gana then.
