What do they have that we don’t?

June 17th, 2006 | By: Euler Costa | 23 Comments »

I thought people would like to know what’s going on with the Brazilian press. Here are some images with some translations. It reflects mostly my general feelings too, like I said before, about Ronaldo and now about Argentina’s chances too. Take a look!

First after Ronaldo’s health:

Newspapers from Brazil

In the first: “Ronaldo gets dizzy and ends up in the hospital” – “Phenomenon feels the weight of embarrassment” – “Group makes pact to recover Ronaldo” – “Depression can be the reason for the bad phase”

In the second: “Tonto!” (this means dizzy but also can be interpreted as ‘fool’) – “Ronaldo feels dizzyness after weak debut at the World Cup. After exams he will be back in training normally”

In the third: “Heavy pressure”

More papers

1st: “In Germany a replay of France” – “A physical problem wouldn’t do that to him” (the 2002 psychologist) – “Croatian defender swaggers: It was easy to deal with Ronaldo”

2nd: “The moment of truth for Ronaldo” – “His condition on the pitch and problems outside of it are troubleing the coaches”

And now about the great Argentine match:

Argentine Glory at Last!

“What they do have: FOOTBALL”

“What they don’t have: fever, blisters, dizzyness, the best in the world (Ronaldinho), the ‘magic square’, night clubs, argument with the president, fight with the press”

Congratulations to Argentina! The economy is growing and the football is great. Arriba muchachos!

Good, good. I like it. There can be no overconfidence now.

Hey Australia! Did you hear? Brazil is OK but Argentina is much better now. Be thankful you’re not playing Argentina, and get ready for an easy match with Brazil.

We must bow to the Argentine competence. I am a football fan and they played very well today. I am a Messi fan from watching him playing at the Barcelona team. I knew he and Tevez were going to score.

Now the pressure is on them, thankfully. Australia will be at full throttle against Brazil, so we must keep our fingers crossed.

Oh my god! what was that second goal from Argentina?! what the hell is going on?! beautiful! fantastic! Maradona looked like a kid in joy, very funny!

I hope we have Brasil X Argentina in the finals, just like in the Confederations Cup, when we crushed them 4 X 1.

Ronaldo Makes Me Sick

I cannot believe how a talent like Ronaldo would show up overweight in the greatest sporting event in the world. The 1996, 1997 and 2002 World Footballer of the Year was a disgrace in the first game against Croatia with Kaka providing the only goal fo…

No need for all of this bickering. The solution is simple: bench Ronaldo.

Hi folks,

I am actually an Argentina fan, and was really happy with the result yesterday. But it’s good to see that you folks are apreceating our play.

I do hope Brazil plays to its potential too, because a South American final would be great. I thought Brazil looked much sharper when Robinho came in place of Ronaldo. His disadvantage is that he is of a more slender-build than Ronaldo, but I think his speed and dribbling skills outweigh that disadvantage.

Best wishes against Australia…they are tough (and sometimes dirty) tacklers…Zico can tell you!

Hi guys, I hope you accept the opinion of an argentinean: Ronaldo may be fat and his private life may be a mess, but I’m sure he still has some killer instinct left and that he will use it. Is more important to see if he’s today the better option you have in that position. And you have a great bench regarding forwards. Leave the rest for the tabloids, they will have guaranteed fun.
Regarding Brazil’s level, it doesn’t surprise me. You are always slow starters, and you appear later on at full speed.
So, I’m absolutely sure that we’ll see you at least in semifinals. and then I dream of a Argentina Brazil final. And at that moment… may the best win. I hope it’ll be us… :o )

Of course we accept your opinion, Keyser! I hope you are right about Brazil. Imagine what a final would it be!!! That would be absolutely fantastic! At that moment… may the best football win. I hope Brazil gets the Hexa!!! :)

Keep in mind that the Australians have been training, eating and sleeping about this game for six months. Don’t take them lightly.

The second games have provided good indications of the performance of a team.

Argentina played well in the first game but showed incredible performance in the second game.

Italy had a good first game and a very poor second game.

Czechs had very good performance in their first game and became unglued in their second match losing to Ghana.

England, Portugal, Holland and Germany had decent first two games but nothing to write home about even if they achieved the right result.

Spain had a very good first game. We’ll find out how they do next.

Brasil had an OK first game. We’ll see how they play against Australia who are physical and have great stamina and motivation.

That’s a bunch of god damn bullshit!! Brasil is still the best in the world, and will be for the next 12 years!!! How dare all of you show disrespect to an amazing team and an outstanding player and legend such as Ronaldo! His personal life is no business of yours, and although he has gained weight, he is still better than any player in Brasil’s group. Fuck all of you.

I’ll make a prediction right here in the Brazilian blog.

Argentina will win this year’s World Cup, without a doubt.

All teams look ordinary but Argentina is simply OUT OF THIS WORLD!

And I am not Argentinean, I AM KENYAN.

While almost everyone is trying to score goals (and this includes Argentina as well), Argentina is playing beautiful football.

THese guys move like a well oiled machine and don’t seem to force it. They have the cohesion, have quick, short, shrewd and crisp passes and they are in sync!

That is what football is.

Brazil had a great team in 2002. Today, they can only yearn for those days. Your game against Croatia was lucklustre. It was lackadaisical and I’ll not talk about your hero Ronaldo.

Game 2 against Australia was quite good. You improved. Let’s hope that like wine, you get better with age.

Personally, I’d love a Brazil/Argentina final and obviously, as a fan since 1986, I’ll be rooting for Argentina as usual.
Theirs is more than a soccer team. It is football clinic. It is byuuutifuuuuul!

Good luck!
