Lucas Leiva at Liverpool

Who is Lucas Leiva? He is another Brazilian young promise for the future of our National Team. Lucas (he uses this name on his jersey) is now at the English Liverpool team (as a sub, for now), but before that he was champion of the Campeonato Gaúcho (state championship) and runner up at the Copa Libertadores with Grêmio (same as Ronaldinho in Brazil) and also lead Brazil’s U-20 team to win the South American Youth Championship in 2007, scoring 4 times in 9 matches. Too bad he wasn’t able to go to the U-20 World Championship. He was also elected “Brazilian Footballer of the Year” in 2006 for his participation in the National Championship, where Grêmio ended up at the third place.

He will be 23 in 2010 so, if he keeps the good work in Europe, there are big chances he will go to Africa wearing the Canary uniform.

Thanks for the info on Lucas. Would appreciate more of the same on likely starters for the Olympic team. Can only come up with Marcelo, Anderson and Lucas so far. I assumed that Rafael Sobis would be included as a within age limit player, but am unsure given his birth year is listed as 1985. Would also appreciate any thoughts anyone may have as to whether over-23 players will be sent this time and who the over age limit selections might be.
